Working at NSC was extremely motivating and gratifying due to the executive management's vision and innovation.

    Regional Director (Former Employee)
    Herndon, VA

ProsThe company is highly organized and has an established client base. Training and overall corporate infrastructure exists, making the workplace a great pleasure.

ConsIT resources are slightly limited. This is more of a hinderance internally as external IT needs and solutions take a higher priority.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the great work. The success thus far is a product of the fine executive management skills the "C" levels have.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

There is one great surprise after another.

    Director (Current Employee)
    Herndon, VA

ProsVery generous benefits. Casual dress, lots of promotional opportunities. Wellness program with free gym membership. Nice people.

ConsSome people who don't carry their weight. Whiners who have been there too long to know what goes on the in the real world.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing what you are doing. Challenge your people more - they have capacity and want to make a difference.

    Good internship.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGood pay, reasonable hours, employees very friendly towards interns. Actually given face time with the CEO.

ConsSome interns complained that they didn't have much to do and other complained they had too much busy work. Overall the company's work isn't very sexy.

Organizational Identity Crisis Affects Employees and Customers

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGenerous 401K, good benefits package, fun events, casual dress code, (mostly) great people, convenient location, ample parking.

ConsFor a non-profit, senior management spends a large amount of time focused on the bottom line, and given the number of re-organizations they've put the staff through (six significant structural shuffles in five years), to say they're experiencing an identity crisis is an understatement. By trying to branch out into too many different areas, they're sacrificing customer service and losing sight of the core services and values that established them as a leader in the industry. Ironically, in a desperate attempt to become one of the area's "Best Places to Work" (and giving staff survey after survey to measure their progress on that goal), their efforts are lackluster and progress towards achieving that aim is floundering at best. Communication between management and staff is poor while gossip is rampant, and learning about changes in corporate strategy or structure from the new guy two cubicles down is not the best way to run a business.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire quality people, pay them a competitive salary and treat them with respect. Don't lose sight of the organization's roots. Reconnect with your customers. Don't make promises you can't deliver. And here is how you become a "Best Place to Work": Stop patting yourselves on the backs for earning awards that none of the staff have ever heard of before, and start listening to the employees and the customers. They are the lifeblood of the organization; not you.

    Proponents of work-life balance
    Summer flex schedules
    Awesome annual dinner
    Bonuses
    Matching 401k
    Friendly co-workers
    Subsidized sodas (only a quarter!)

    Tuition reimbursement

ConsPay is lower than private sector
    Oligarchical management
    No real career path
    Unequal promotion opportunities
A lack of training the trainers

Advice to Senior ManagementPerks are nice, but it's better to get at the root of the problems rather than glossing them over with free food.

Employees were not treated with respect by upper management.

Customer Service Representative I (Former Employee)
    Herndon, VA

ProsI enjoyed assisting schools with issues on reporting status & students with problems on the deferment process of their loans.

ConsThe Human Resource department worked mainly to assist upper management and not the employees. There were limited employment opportunities for advancement within the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement should be more receptive to their employees since they can provide suggestions on how to solve particular issues, and work together as a team in order to make the company grow.

    Terrible management

    Java Developer (Former Employee)
    Herndon, VA

ProsGood benefits and nice facilities with a gym
Some of the people there were nice?
This 20 word minimum is difficult for the "Pros" section...

ConsWorking as a software developer, the management when I was there (2009) was terrible. They hired me as a Java developer, but I was stuck doing development on their legacy systems. The management didn't really care that I wasn't doing the type of work I wanted to do, and would micromanage everything that I did. I left the company within 6 months.

Laid back environment, but unnecessarily strict.

Customer Service Representative I (Former Employee)
    Herndon, VA

Proscasual dress, nice facility, many of the coworkers were friendly and nice, plenty of parking, good benefits

Consonly had two 5 minute breaks + lunch, was supposed to sit and type in numbers the rest of the day, very little feedback, got in trouble for walking around more than 3x per day

Advice to Senior Managementif the workers are doing their job, let them get up from their desks once and a while

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
