Good company, lots of changes, poor management decisions

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Columbus, OH

ProsVery sound company, conservative with products, strong desire to grow

ConsManagement continues to cut jobs even when economy was stabilizing. Lost a lot of great people, will take a long time to recover.

Advice to Senior ManagementUse the Southwest Airlines approach of employee first, which leads to consumer happiness. Your quick to cut the workforce attitude has ruined employee morale.

It's a great place for the most part. In IT, depends on the area. Movement around the company can be hard to do.

ProsBenefits are great. Flex time is very nice. Great people to work with. Very dedicated to customer service. Senior management is very committed to customer service also.

ConsCan be long hours. Comp time is not 1 for 1. Job description don't always match the work done.

Management talks a good talk, but that is as far as it goes. In other words, they are good at lying to their employees.

    Inbound Sales (Former Employee)
    Dublin, OH

ProsIf you are fortunate enough to work for an experienced manager, you can expect to be treated fairly. However, once you have been there a few years there look for new blood to abuse.

ConsLow pay and no respect for employees who have been with the company for a few years. Also, managers are a puppet on a string and unable to make decisions for themselves.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire managers that know how to manage and care about their people.

    Nationwide Financial

    Internal Retirement Consultant (Current Employee)
    Columbus, OH

ProsGet to work with great external sales partners.
They offer you 20 Days PTO and have ok benefit plans.

ConsYou will work for the most uneducated management staff. They have no idea how to run an internal sales department and will treat you like a number. There is no opportunity for growth and no training available. If you want to settle in life and take orders from a robot, this is the job for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementHelp the company out by fire yourself.

Great company but hard to advance

    Internal Wholesaler (Former Employee)
    Dublin, OH

ProsThis company is a great place to gain experience in the financial services industry. Great products and competitive in their space.

ConsDistribution is lacking. Could be a larger player in the industry if they looked at their distribution model a little closer.

Advice to Senior ManagementDefining a career path for engaged employees and having more competitive compensation would probably allow for greater retention of and attraction of top talent

An "OK" and stable position, but ....

    IT Specialist (Current Employee)
    Columbus, OH

Pros- very stable position, no fear of layoffs as a full-time employee (at least in my department)
    - laid-back, able to balance between family and job
    - flexible to take a couple hours here and there, as needed

    Cons- too political
    - career growth is no longer done by promotion.. either you move to another department for a higher position, or get out of the company
    - process, process, process --- to much paperwork
    - benefits are being cut year after year.. what's left ??

Advice to Senior Management- treat your employees right, and it will pay off !!
    - don't make big changes and not communicating to employees
    - reduce paperwork, and process as just a means to make everything look good on paper.

Nice people. But not very good at their jobs.

    Marketing (Current Employee)
    Columbus, OH

ProsMost of the people who work at Nationwide are nice. There isn't a lot of arguing or yelling. There is a good amount of flexibility, in terms of you schedule and taking time off whenever you need to. There has been a huge investment in training and education - the Masters in Marketing degree program with OSU is great. People in Marketing have a lot of exposure to key decisions-makers within the company.

ConsA lot of people don't seem to be very good at their jobs. Half of the people in Marketing don't have any marketing experience outside of Nationwide. They started in the call centers and saw Marketing as a way to get off the phones. Their skills are not a good match with their roles and responsibilities. And since it's nearly impossible to fire anyone at Nationwide, even people who aren't a good fit for their role will stick it out for years before finally be forced out or fired. This is a very consensus-driven culture where taking risks is not rewarded.

Advice to Senior ManagementAs a company, we really need to learn how to focus on what matters most. We're getting closer to being able to identify what matters. But we're still spending a lot of resources on projects and tasks that don't matter. We need to learn how to say "no" and then stick to our guns. More work, more people, more projects, more products will not help us in the long run. Focusing on the few that matter the most is the only way to survive and thrive.
