I have been working at Nationwide full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedules, wonderful friends made along the way, great working environment. Nationwide is like a big family.

    Cons

Advancement is very hard for most, you have to know someone or be under 40. NW does not value longevity either. It's a shame actually. They're missing the boat on this one.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your over 40 crowd. We have the experience, knowledge and we still have so much more to give. Take a chance on someone who has dedicated half their life to service of your company. Younger isn't more productive nor is it more stable.

I have been working at Nationwide full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great company to work for. They really do care about their customers and are very customer focused. Great benefits and time off. Can start at the bottom and work your way up but you have to be patient and put in the hard work and time to achieve it.

    Cons

In the Total Loss Department, it is very stressful! Be prepared to be yelled at by customers, to argue with them everyday, and constantly explain you are not trying to screw them out of money. Sometimes there is very high claim volume with limited overtime and pressure to get it all done. So you can experience unreasonable work expectations that can drive you crazy. Some of the Managers understand and care about their employees (not just advancing their own career). Hopefully, you get one that cares, because if not, then they do anything to weed you out to make themselves look better. With this fast paced and EXTREMELY stressful job if the Management is not "On Your Side" you are doomed to fail, quit or get fired no matter how hard you try.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When your employees are swamped in work and not allowed to work overtime to get caught up, try doing something to actually help them. Telling them they are behind and need to get caught up ISN'T help! Jump in and do some real work for once, maybe skip a meeting or two and make time to do task that will help your team? Stop looking for things to get people in trouble and use that time to HELP do the work.

I worked at Nationwide full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Nationwide is a great place to work. The company is actively involved in the community and believes in developing its people. Also offer household member benefits, which is great not only for the LBGT community, but for mixed households.

    Cons

The benefits have evolved over the years to be more in line with the direction other corporations are going. The vacation and sick time are lumped together. If you get sick, you have to dip into what could have been vacation time. If you have surgery or a serious illness, you have to use up 5 days of that time before short-term disability kicks in.
