I worked at Nationwide full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    * Benefits are good. * Good company for young people starting out. * Pay is competitive.

    Cons

    * The top of the house in IT is a do-nothing "Invisible Man" * Parts of IT are allowed to ignore strategic direction with impunity * If you're not in Columbus, you're not much * If you ARE In Columbus, if you're not in Plaza One, you're not much * IT strategy has apparently become "replace everything all at once", creating utter chaos * Leaders are promoted mostly based on political intrigues, not abilities * Infrastructure and Operations runs like an unresponsive impenetrable fortress

    Advice to Management

IT leadership needed an overhaul years ago

I have been working at Nationwide full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very few, 401k is good, nice co workers for the most part.

    Cons

Extremely top heavy. Arrogant leadership who can't see the forrest through the trees. Deceptive and dishonest leaders throughout the organization. Good ole boy network. Lack of respect for front line employees. Pay is lower than competitors.

    Advice to Management

Understand that there is a difference between a leader and a "boss." Recognize talent so the truly talented don't leave the company. Appreciate people on a human level. Creat an engaging environment that is less like prison. Improve pay.

I worked at Nationwide full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Large company, decent benefits, reputable company

    Cons

Pay is less than competitors, good ole boys network in some locations, field locations treated like "step children", not much room for advancement; VERY political atmosphere. Can't be honest and truthful-that has negative results on your career advancement.

    Advice to Management

Too top heavy- need to start givng your small diverse population a chance. The world doesn't revolve around Columbus, OH.

I have been working at Nationwide full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay is competitive, you can make a decent salary if you negotiate well in the beginning. Being an adjuster gives you lots of freedom because you set your own schedule, as long as you are organized and get your work done you are golden. If you come prepared with some knowledge, they are willing to train you. Company car with perks.

    Cons

Overwhelming workload, consistently short staffed, no work/home life balance, highly stressful and demanding. Managers don't manage, they supervise. Nationwide seems to be the grandfather of the insurance world, they are apprehensive about change, and once they are forced to change to adapt to technology, etc. they overhaul everything rapidly, at once and expect nothing less than perfection during the transition. Not very diverse when it comes to gender or race. They don't have their employees best interests at hand. It's nearly impossible to be spontaneous with vacation time and if you leave the company before 5 years, they don't cash out your vacation time or allow you to take it--they absorb it back into the company as if you did not earn it. They are very mechanical and stiff with it comes to their employees interests. It's hard to move around within the company unless you are willing to relocate.

    Advice to Management

Hire more women and more people of color. Don't be so afraid of technology but allow a learning curve for your employees to catch on. Utilize technology better to streamline your business practices. Allow people to take time off--completely overhaul and revamp the way that vacations are handled. Loosen up, as a company, you look like the stiff and uncomfortable old man of the insurance industry. Don't just act like you are concerned about your employees, really appreciate them and show them--the job is already thankless.
