I have been working at Native American Health Center full-time

    Pros

Strives to meet the needs of community, client and community centered, caring staff.

    Cons

There is favoritism and rules change depending on who you are and who you know. Unclear and unreasonable expectations, poor leadership and no organizational training or team building. A lot of pointing fingers and shaming staff goes on here. There is no uniform process and channels for dealing with problems are tainted with nepotism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to get to know your staff. Develop a uniform process for dealing with problems and actually hold yourselves accountable to following it. Stop blaming individuals and learn how to approach issues from a systems framework.

    Pros

They're union. You may find a good person or two who actually care for the community and the true mission of the clinic.

    Cons

Non-competitive salary, absolute minimum pay in the industry. Clinic is in a high crime rate area, no staff parking, very little public parking, mostly metered, no security. Nepotism is rampant. Micro-management. Favoritism is obvious, seniority is useless. Policies not applied fairly. Policy is unclear and they make access to the policies and procedures manual difficult. Information not shared across departments. Extremely high staff turnover. Constant payroll issues and errors, not being paid properly or on time is common. Poor staff training. No regard for seniority. Employees are given no respect as a human being. A lot of company and community politics, inside turmoil, problems amongst staff, total toxic environment. Entire staff is voiceless.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Humble yourselves. Listen openly and honestly to what people have to say, positive and negative. The mission of the center would be attainable if the employees were able to focus on the community and not the toxic internal politics of the company. Let people who want to help, help. Don't allow people to be terminated because you or someone else just doesn't like them. Pay living wages.

I have been working at Native American Health Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A few caring co-workers who are supportive and hardworking. A few helpful employees who want to make a difference. Caters to the poor community.

    Cons

Contradictory messages to staff. Doesn't value employee opinions and input. Lacks support from management. Favoritism apparent throughout organization. Unsafe practices throughout organization and swept under the rug. Lack of leadership skills and untrained staff. Lack of accountability for decisions made by upper management. Disorganized, chaotic and hostile environment. Workers stealing from the company and taking advantage of the system. Payroll issues -- employees not getting paid on time and accurately. Lack of access to patients -- hard for patients to get through phones, get referrals or medications or appointments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to be accountable for their actions. Also need to be fair with everyone. Needs to outline plans and be more organized. Need to communicate and be supportive.

    Pros

The clientele and patients reflected a diverse population and culture in a rich and heavily populated urban metropolitian area with unique needs that the organization strived to meet directly or collaboratively.

    Cons

Local was sometimes cumbersome to get to.

I have been working at Native American Health Center as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

There are some very well intending staff on board. They get work life balance and will work with you if you are sick or injured.

    Cons

Very disorganized and there is a lot of infighting and constant tension in the Wellness department and in medical. The chain of command is vague and there are constant power struggles. Most meetings are just long arguments with accusations all over the place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maybe hire someone everyone talk about Native and non-native problems.

    Pros

Genuine and caring coworkers. We have a strong sense of purpose and community. Fun community events all year.

    Cons

Rampant nepotism. Destructive gossip presides over policy and procedure. Promotions not based on skill, seniority or merit. Health related business and professional codes are flouted.
Internal organization and task flow is redundant and cumbersome. Constant internal fighting and conflict. Revolving door for employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase use of policy and procedure. Increase number of human resource personnel. Promote from within based on seniority, education and skill level rather than race or familial relation.
