I have been working at Naval Surface Warfare Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Cons

    Very few career growth opportunities.

I worked at Naval Surface Warfare Center (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A lot of variety in the type of work available. Opportunities for advancement are there. You get to work on state of the art and relevant systems. Good mix from advanced R&D through limited production.

    Cons

The typical downside with working on DOD programs... programs come and go, so you have to find your own work occasionally (better you find your own then someone else find it for you).

    Advice to Management

Focus on more interaction between departments. Continue to buffer some of the knee-jerk rules that come down from NAVSEA HQ so the engineers and scientists can get their work done.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Naval Surface Warfare Center full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Overall there is a lot of exciting work going on at NSWC Crane, especially if you are an engineer or scientist. You are only expected to work a normal work week and are compensated for anything greater than 40 hours. Benefits include multiple choices of health plans, a defined benefit retirement, 5% matching 401K/Roth 401K, 13 days/yr of sick leave, and 13-20 days/yr of annual leave.

    Cons

As expected with any government position, there are a lot of politics within the workplace regarding the projects being completed. Pay increases are generally small overall (~1-2% per year) and there are not many opportunities for additional pay increase beyond moving into management.

    Advice to Management

It would be good to offer the ability for employees to receive raises based on increases in their education and certifications such as receiving a Master's Degree or a specialty license within their career field. There also needs to be a more defined career path for the technical workforce without going into management.

I worked at Naval Surface Warfare Center as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great, friendly, smart people. Fun and nice atmosphere/campus. Lots of meaningful collaboration on projects, working toward important goals.

    Cons

Huge facility, part of a system of many, many other labs. Being part of a big, bureaucratic government organization can have its pitfalls when trying to get new software approved, communicate with another lab across the country about something, get internet access for an intern, etc.

    Advice to Management

Update and modernize software. As a computer science intern, it could be very frustrating to have to code in outdated languages and versions of things.

    Pros

Loved the creativity, and challenge working on warfare systems for Surface Navy.

    Cons

Big Navy, big government equals red tape!

    Advice to Management

It is very difficult for management to make decisions, when all of the decisions are made uptown by DoD.

I have been working at Naval Surface Warfare Center full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flex time, vacation/sick time based on seniority - 6 weeks vacation after 3 yrs. Good pay. Interesting work. Get to help the Navy. Stable employment. There are a lot of good people working there, who care about getting things right and helping the Navy succeed. Can learn a lot from the folks who have been working there, if you take the initiative and seek out mentors.

    Cons

Limited advancement if you don't want to be in management. Bureaucracy. Takes forever to get things approved/implemented. Dependent on Congress/Federal Gov't to get their act together on the budget. Cost of living increases dependent on Congress/politics. Weak "formal" mentoring program.

    Advice to Management

Need strong mentoring program. Love the flex time.

    Pros

Stable, with few layoffs. Good work-life balance.

    Cons

Difficult to stand out. Little knowledge of work impact.

    Advice to Management

Design decisions should come from bottom-level people, less from management.
