I worked at Naval Surface Warfare Center as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Very friendly, very helpful and I learned a lot in the 22 weeks I spent there.

    Cons

If you do not have a car, the bus works. But you are stuck to a bus schedule for your work schedule.

I have been working at Naval Surface Warfare Center full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent starting salary for Engineers. A lot of upward mobility for those interested. Projects are interesting. I love my job.

    Cons

No place is perfect. Sometimes it seems management does not have a clue, but that's probably true in many places and maybe just my perception.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come out of your comfort zone and go out and visit your sponsors, see what is changing out there.

I have been working at Naval Surface Warfare Center full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Career Development, Supportive Organization, Important Work, Satisfying, Flexible Schedules,

    Cons

Like any government job, you need to stay on top of people when you need personnel issues taken care of, which is difficult as a new employee if you do not know how to be assertive. Congress and their budget issues effect our yearly standard of living wages, and possibility of furloughs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is supposed to assign in developing plans for individual development of new employees but do not know how to, or do not want to take the time to assist new employees.

I have been working at Naval Surface Warfare Center

    Pros

Great place to work. Many opportunities for advancement and great support for pursuing continuing education and advanced degrees. Management (in my department) was supportive and great to work with. Coworkers are some of the best and the work is something we can be proud of.

    Cons

Big Navy and government bureaucracy can sometimes get in the way. Sometimes the focus of work is to fix the latest "fire drill" and not the long term issues to benefit the Navy.

I worked at Naval Surface Warfare Center as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great, friendly, smart people. Fun and nice atmosphere/campus. Lots of meaningful collaboration on projects, working toward important goals.

    Cons

Huge facility, part of a system of many, many other labs. Being part of a big, bureaucratic government organization can have its pitfalls when trying to get new software approved, communicate with another lab across the country about something, get internet access for an intern, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Update and modernize software. As a computer science intern, it could be very frustrating to have to code in outdated languages and versions of things.

    Pros

Loved the creativity, and challenge working on warfare systems for Surface Navy.

    Cons

Big Navy, big government equals red tape!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is very difficult for management to make decisions, when all of the decisions are made uptown by DoD.

I have been working at Naval Surface Warfare Center full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Flex time, vacation/sick time based on seniority - 6 weeks vacation after 3 yrs. Good pay. Interesting work. Get to help the Navy. Stable employment. There are a lot of good people working there, who care about getting things right and helping the Navy succeed. Can learn a lot from the folks who have been working there, if you take the initiative and seek out mentors.

    Cons

Limited advancement if you don't want to be in management. Bureaucracy. Takes forever to get things approved/implemented. Dependent on Congress/Federal Gov't to get their act together on the budget. Cost of living increases dependent on Congress/politics. Weak "formal" mentoring program.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need strong mentoring program. Love the flex time.

Difficult to stand out. Little knowledge of work impact.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Design decisions should come from bottom-level people, less from management.
