I have been working at Navigators as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    Friendly place
people help each other when they need it
    nice and spacious office
    very flexible on hours

    Cons

a little disorganized in the work they assign - I worked for weeks, before the project changed direction and everything was scrapped
not so great on training - I had to learn most things by myself (although it's probably better that way)

    Pros

Management team, core values and focus on profitable growth based on underwriting proficiency and discipline.

    Cons

Mid-size company operating on a global scale creates challenges.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you are doing.

    I worked at Navigators full-time

    Pros

    Salary, co-workers, company growth, fair.

    Cons

Management bottlenecks, lots of fire fighting

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Anonymously get more in touch with the employees (not manager) to see where problems are.

Intelligently take a look at Internet usage, and if the employee over using it is not performing well, fire them. If an employee is not self-motivated to find work to do, this is non-motivating hard-workers employees.

I worked at Navigators full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great company because of the benefits. Local management is very involved in the departments and quick to praise the team members for good work.

    Cons

Trust is a factor that needs to be addressed. Advancement is also very difficult to do from within.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If the people of the organization are the asset that you say they are, try harder to make them believe it.

I have been working at Navigators

    Pros

I guess the one positive is that the company is small so you tend to be able to get lost in the shuffle.

    Cons

The company has a practice of contract to hire and drags their feet. They also consider themselves to be a delivery focused company, yet, management is a HUGE bottleneck when it comes to getting anything done. This prevents you from getting anything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you say something, follow through. Also, stop being bottlenecks.

I have been working at Navigators

    Pros

Extreme freedom to do you job; extremely entrepreneurial; nice offices in great location for commuters; laid back day to day environment; nice friendly people.

    Cons

Major silos - poor interaction between departments and different product lines. In my division, underwriting guidelines are confusing, not clearly communicated and seem to be different for different peoples. There are clear favorites who bring in big $$ and get special treatment no matter how crazy they act and who they offend. Zero feedback from division management regarding where you stand or a job well done.

You are thrown into a market and told to build it with you contacts. If you don't bring in $$ you are let go or your territory is shut down. Known for getting in and out of business lines and territories fast. People are nervous about their jobs and futures. Not focused on employee morale. No one is really straight forward about what the issues are or how to fix them. Day to day peer to peer interaction below Sr. Management level is very negative. Not a happy place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Note cons listed above and address them. Try to really understand what is going on in the underwriting ranks (beyond those surveys) and go from there.

I have been working at Navigators

    Pros

The Navigators really do understand people. They are eager to offer the training and care that you need as an individual. They provide excellent opportunities for employees to minister and love people well.

    Cons

There are no downsides. This is a Non-Profit, so if you are in it to make a lot of money, you are in the wrong industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thank you for all your hard work, and making the Navigators an environment of grace, and a fun place to work.

I have been working at Navigators

    Pros

Great benefits and an understanding management team

    Cons

Very conservative company, some managers play favorites

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More managers on site. I see/hear from my manager once or twice a week. I'd love to not always have to deal with problems on my own, but it does help make me more resourceful.
