    Pros

Nice people , no one works too hard

    Cons

Executives are disconnected and have their own "wing" behind glass doors. Very old school, dead end industry.

    Navis LLC Response

Hmmm. Confusing review. I'm curious as to how long you've actually worked at Navis because my guess is it can't be that long if this is your conclusion of the company and executives.

    Pros

Forward thinking, team oriented, synergistic, self reliant, loyal to its customers and employees. The company allows telecommuting, has offices all over the world, and is very accepting and tolerant of others. It supports and believes is its employees and provides all of the necessary tools to complete the mission. Bill Walsh, CEO of Navis is an outstanding leader and mentor.

    Cons

None that I can think of.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go team....great job! Keep it up.

I have been working at Navis LLC

    Pros

There's not much competition in our market which is very niche.

Work life balance is good and can be great at times.

The office is really nice with a great Jack London Square location.

    Cons

If you're looking to join this company, be skeptical of what they tell you about the job and what it involves and who you will be working with/for. The actual job is probably not what you expect. Be very specific with your questions. They will omit details and provide ambiguous responses to your inquiries. Extremely nice during the interview process.

No equity will be offered if you're joining the team and they will find any reason to pay you under market value while the executives have benefits they keep secret from the rest of the organization.

I don't know if the company is filled with mediocre people, or management encourages them to be that way. People are not motivated and go through the motions without much thought. Those that seems to be working hard somehow end up being fired or quitting, which doesn't make sense while incompetent managers are rewarded.

Performance reviews need improvement. They are very one-sided and should go both ways.

If you want to come out of retirement for an easy job to past the time, this place will be perfect for you.

So many inefficiencies that are ignored.

Unless you're joining our company at the C-Level, don't expect to influence change or improvements. Be prepared to be a cog in a wheel.

The office is right next to the Amtrak station and about every 10 to 15 minutes the train blows it's horn. It takes sometime getting used to it.

Very conservative culture compared to other Bay Area software companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Someone needs to light a fire under you. Recruit knowledgeable managers that do not believe they are God's gift, are willing to get their hands dirty when needed.

Invest more in the success of current employees who are motivated.

    Be more transparent

I have been working at Navis LLC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The executive leaders at Navis at bright, creative, fun, inspiring people to work with and are fine examples of balancing commitment to their families and to the growth and good reputation of Navis.

    Cons

The process to cut employees who are a negative drain to the company is slower than it should be. When you give someone with a poor work ethic and bad attitude an inch, they will always take a mile. Things are definitely improving in the way of some excellent new hires, so I think we are moving in the right direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward the loyal, hard working employees who have proven their worth by compensating them rather than forcing them to find another job just to make the wage they deserve.

    Pros

    They have good engineering managers.
They have interesting work in a challenging domain.
They have a good leadership team.
They have travel opportunities if you want to.

    Cons

They have some old products with very old technology. Sometimes they are hiring for those products.
They do not use fully agile development processes.
It is a conservative company in a conservative industry.

    Pros

People are great that work here. Very smart, intelligent and fun. Work is very challenging and never a dull moment. Leadership team works well together and very supportive of their employees. The office location at Jack London Square is awesome. The pay is good and so are the benefits, 401k match program up to 5%.

    Cons

Challenge is the workload and trying to balance it all.

I worked at Navis LLC full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The shipping business and software is pretty interesting, they were trying to grow and may be doing it better. Lots of good, talented, and interesting people, some good collaboration.

    Cons

Longtime managers with limited skillset and outdated methodologies and expertise do not appreciate innovation or those with other skills. Micromanagement and lack of appreciation of employees, too much free reign on managers with no checks and balances or evaluations.
This company grew very large without the necessary processes or infrastructure and was still trying to catch up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

My colleagues at Navis are amazing people. They are intelligent, creative, giving, hard working and team oriented. I love coming to work every day for various reasons - 360 degree views of the estuary and Oakland, the camaraderie, our customers and the amazing leadership of our President and Executive team. No matter how difficult the task, there is always someone willing to listen, provide feedback and lend a helping hand. This company rocks!

    Cons

    Can't think of any cons.

    Current Employee - Software Engineer

I have been working at Navis LLC full-time

    Pros

Very interesting domain with critical applications, lots of customers internationally with travel opportunities. Relaxed and friendly environment. Perfect for someone with a family who wants a 9-5 programming job. Pretty good location and nice office.

    Cons

Interesting domain problems and opportunities often encumbered by legacy software. Domain knowledge difficult to acquire and weighs equally or more against software development experience. The marine industry is tough, heavily regulated, with huge capital expenditures and long time horizons, and usually run by governments and unions, all which dictate a slow pace of innovation. This again favors highly specific domain knowledge over technical experience and slow evolution of existing software. When the time comes to build a new product, the company hires from the outside because everyone is working on old stuff. This hurts morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less metrics, more actually talking to engineers and looking at code. Try to empathize more with career concerns of developers.
