    Good

Chief Engineer (Former Employee) Lisle, IL

ProsVery exciting work. The leadership was not afraid to take on challenges that allowed ingenuity and product development.
The engineers, especially that more experienced, were great to work with. Friendly, easy to approach, and always ready to mentor and support.
The Lisle and Melrose Park facilities are world class. Great environment to work in!

ConsThe salaries were barely competitive, and with the financial problems they are having and delayed and low raises, the salaries are now too low.
The new upper management (directors and above) is making the environment difficult. Decisions are typically based on politics and perception and not based on experience and facts.
Work is now shifting to more focus on integration, and not as much on development.

Advice to Senior ManagementMust maintain a balance at the leadership (director and above) between longer term Navistar leaders and the fresh new leaders. The new leaders tend to treat the engineers like numbers and have not exemplified walking the talk.

Full Time Employee over 8 years.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Lisle, IL

ProsGreat campus, good group of supportive people. Learn a lot on the job.

ConsConstant threat of lay-off over the past three years. No recognition in the form of raises or upward mobility.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake a BIG announcement that will at the least appear to suggest the end of lay offs and a movement upward. That may help to stop the flow of engineers leaving the company in mass.

Used to be great company on very long downhill

    Manager (Current Employee) Lisle, IL

ProsGreat Lisle IL campus with tons of amenities. Great work/life balance and flexible hours. Added time off during Winter Holiday shutdown on top of regular vacation time. Some departments have a great culture and actually work efficiently on turning company around.
If you want a desk job that requires you do take OK pay and not do a hell lot, this is a place for you.

ConsOffice politics at all levels. Band of brothers from GM took over the company couple of years ago and it's easy to see that the history will repeat itself if you mix in the same GM ingredients. Culture of mediocrity. Decisions are rarely based on logical and factual data driven arguments.
Most of the middle management that was worth something left over last couple of years and either people that were "good enough" were promoted to the empty positions or the positions left empty got eliminated leaving overworked employees in a lot of department.
The layoffs and departures cut the personnel to the bare bones.
Promotions happen if you're part of the "gang", otherwise get back to your desk and work more and harder as that's what's expected of you.
The company used to have great learning center with tons of courses, now there is almost nothing left for employees to utilize as a training tool.
Old school corporate giant that will go down if change doesn't come soon.
Hardly any innovation happening on the product side. They still market a product that was developed in 70's with hardly any improvements over the years, not to mention that it looks like someone beat it with the ugly stick.

Advice to Senior ManagementHow can you run a company with no vision? CEO admitted that he has no 3 and 5 year plan for the company.
Management seems to be changing the targets for performance quarterly. Set some reasonable goals and come up with a plan to save the company instead of hoping that the sales will pick up on their own.
Fix the products finally. Just because you want the quality doesn't mean that it will come on their own. Walk the talk for once and quit making false promises.
Promote people that have right ideas and not right connections.

Great company going through hard times

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Lisle, IL

ProsGreat people and teamwork -- people care about their work and they give their best every day. Used to have great career opportunities and compensation/benefits. I would have given a 4 or 5 star rating five years ago, and I hope the company can get back to that environment.

ConsVery unstable with uncertain future and a lot of employee takeaways over the last two years (holidays, company-paid cell phones, free gym access, annual raises, etc). Lots of cost-cutting, with very limited resources to get work done. Many rounds of layoffs.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think employees would like to see management share more in the takeaways. I have worked at places where management took a pay cut in hard times.

    Navistar Intern

Aero Lab (Current Employee) Lisle, IL

ProsGood paid, lots of learning. Massive Campus (Lisle) with 2 gyms, 2 cafeterias, a library (very useful), etc.
If you are commuting from the city you can easily get there with public transportation. train in Union Station and as you get off the pace bus takes you right to the campus.

Consfar from the city, they are not doing so well.

Not a great place for young talented individuals

    Marketing (Current Employee) Lisle, IL

ProsOpportunities to work with people who are willing to help and collaborate, pockets of smart and talented individuals, work-life balance

ConsLack of opportunities to learn new skill sets, mediocrity is tolerated, no career advancement or talent development plans in place

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you truly want to hire, nurture and retain young talented individuals to drive the future of this firm it's time to raise the bar on performance, career development opportunities and embrace technology by investing in IT

    People abandoning the ship.

Vehicle Engineering Manager (Former Employee) Lisle, IL

ProsFeel like you contribute to the companies success. Interesting work. Potentially good advancement ops. Group was extremely friendly. Large company.

ConsOffice politics. Experienced employees are leaving. No historical data being maintained. If your face fits you will advance. Negative atmosphere.

Advice to Senior ManagementTransparent communication is needed. Too many hallway conversations.

    Depressing

Former Program Manager (Former Employee) Lisle, IL

ProsNice campus, Troy Clarke OK. There are good individuals at the company. But not enough in leadership. Some are trying hard to do a good job

ConsToo many people in leadership that have no ethics, no sense for quality and too many yes persons. There are also too many in leadership that are just incompetent.

Advice to Senior ManagementSell the company

    – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
