    Pros

Good union environment prevents this from being a terrible place to work.

    Cons

Management has no interest in your ideas or opinions so shut your mouth is what I often hear working here. If you have an idea to save money or help the company well you know better than to share it. If management doesn't come up with the idea, it isn't a good one.

    Advice to Management

Often the best ideas come from your employees, but if you refuse to listen or have an open mind you get the results that have left to thousands of employees losing their jobs over the last several years.

I worked at Navistar full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The benefits are very good and the wide range of products they manufacture can make a career there interesting and engaging.

    Cons

The company culture, constant down sizing and product quality. With the constant change it seemed like everything was always in flux. That made the work less rewarding and sometimes very difficult as you may be trying to hit a moving target.

    Advice to Management

I would recommend that management take a good, long, hard look on the morale and productivity of their employees in an effort to improve it.

I have been working at Navistar full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-Salary and benefits are pretty good. -Pockets of people who are interested in advancing the state of the art. -There is a lot of opportunity to make a difference, if you're willing to fight for it.

    Cons

-A lot of corporate inertia (lots of 'this is the way we've done it in the past, so it's how we're going to do it in the future'). -The pockets of people who are interested in advancing the state of the art are not (yet) at the level where they can do it. -Silo mentality of previous regimes still in the process of being broken down. -Turnover and attrition are higher than average - approaching the point where it burns out the remaining staff.

    Advice to Management

If you're interested in doing some new things, put a little bit of money (it doesn't have to be a lot) into developing some new technologies in house - you have the talent to do it, and it might result in beating your competition to market.

I have been working at Navistar full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    1. Working level people are nice and easy to interact with, there is still potential in the company 2. Work offers learning opportunities on complex very feature oriented products 3. Benefits and compensation offered by the company are good in comparison to competitors 4. Navistar WHQ campus in Lisle is very nice 5. Jeans are allowed to wear on Fridays and, in general, there is no strict office hours and appearance rules 6. CEO Troy Clarke seems to be 10x better than his two others predecessors

    Cons

    1. Navistar - very last purely American truck-maker - currently deals with very unstable businesses case - starting from 2011 the company consecutively loose money quoter by quoter due to the unfortunate business decision made in the past (they do not maintain cash-flow), and the future is unknown. Many workers are not comfortable with such a case and plenty of good people leave the company. 2. Despite the fact that working level people are knowledgeable, helpful and generally nice to work with, it is hard to understand and follow upper management directions and decision - sometimes incompetent and often incoherent to long term plans. 3. Unfortunately Navistar's products are non-competitive to the others in the same business sector. Navistar offers very complex - feature oriented products. Navistar tries to do the best in order to attract potential customer - with greater reliability, Cummins engines, a new designs on the horizon. Their vehicles are definitely more reliable these days. 4. Navistar's process of development is not that perfect.

    Advice to Management

I wish Navistar could go back to large scale defense programs. I wish Navistar could have large scale resources that can be spent on up to date development.

I have been working at Navistar full-time

    Pros

Generally the "working level" employees are dedicated to their work and want to do the right thing. There are many opportunities to make yourself known because of the many challenges the company is facing that need to be addressed but aren't anyone's "job." The cafeteria at the world headquarters is very nice.

    Cons

Middle-to-Upper level management routinely shoots first and asks questions later. The same management is often the biggest barrier to solving the problems they require their lower level managers and "working level" employees to address. Very little communication, transparency, and planning seem to exist on scales larger than small operating units/teams.

    Advice to Management

Take these challenges our company has faced on the chin and step back, make a plan, and start to fix problems the right way instead of the fast-without-spending-money way

    Pros

Company attempting to turn around. Potential for a good bonus this year only. Nice campus.

    Cons

Compensation lags behind market. Small spans of control for managers and layers of middle management with little to no power to effect change.

    Advice to Management

Reward employees through a flexible work environment and competitive pay.
