I have been working at Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

This is a great company to work for and they are very flexible with your schedule. Hard work does pay off in the end.

    Cons

I can not think of any cons apart from the obvious fact that the pay is less than what you would earn in the private sector. The other side of the coin is that the benefits are greater than you would normally see in the private sector.

    The Supervisors are incompetent

    Pros

Co-workers and training at the UN Family and Law Center- great people to work with

    Cons

Supervisors - mid and upper totally incompetent, also, NE Taxpayers HEADS UP: infiltrated by G&L Lobby and working TOTALLY against the ideals of this department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dismantle and run as private industry. Train, review competent and replace incompetent middle and senior management

Lots of wonderful folks working their butts off to help others, hamstrung by Administrators who don't understand the job

I have been working at Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The work is very fulfilling and meaningful if you want to help others and make a positive impact int he community.

    Cons

The burnout rate is high due to the emotional investment required to actually do a good job. But if you put your heart into forming relationships with the clients we serve, that effort does not show up in the numbers and data that Administrators only seem to care about. Most administrators have never carried a caseload and do not often understand the real work that goes into helping our clients. Very few perks, very few opportunities for advancement or recognition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Supervisors and Administrators need to listen more to workers' concerns and implement positive changes quicker. High turnover is exacerbated by leadership that does not seem to have the workers' backs. Poor morale comes most directly from the high caseloads that result from constant turnover and leadership that is either ineffective or not understanding.

    Pros

HHS offers great training opportunities and has started working hard to make sure workers are trained before they get cases dumped on them. You also get state government benefits (health insurance, retirement plans etc) - the benefits can't be beat in the private sector. There are lots of opportunities to move up (or move to a different department) - HHS also has offices all over the state, so if necessary you can move towns and keep a similar job title.

    Cons

Case loads are really high, and when you're doing this kind of work its hard to leave it at 5pm and go home....if you have a heart for the work you're doing, you'll end up putting in a lot more than 40 hours per week. Some workers are require to take on-call, in addition to regular working hours. Expecations from management are sometimes unrealistic, especially given the high caseloads. Management seems to tell you what needs done w/o helping you figure out realistically how to get it done. (i.e. you will see all the kids on your caseload this month, you will get all your documentation done, and you will not work overtime b/c the department doesn't want to pay for it)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please recognize how many cases I have and be realistic in your expecations. Help me prioritize to determine what needs done first, and what can slide until case loads are more manageable.
