Pros
They offer their employees many incentives and bonuses for achieving and exceeding goals. Senior management is very supportive with Department Managers. High standards for store presentation and merchandising.
Cons
People referring to the company as "Needless Mark-ups". On the contrary, Neiman's has some great sales. The Neiman's that I worked at also had a reputation for very snobby sales associates.There were a few but for the most part my associates in my department were very down to earth and gave exceptional customer service.
Advice to Senior Management
Senior Management did not have that roll-up your sleeves and participate in manual labor style. I felt like a glorified stock person most of the time.

Highly respective organization in high end retail market. Stable organization with excellent vision from senior management. Outstanding executive training program. Great opportunity for advancement. Store locations in excellent and exciting cities. Good job opportunities across many division lines.

Can't think of any downside...retail hours can be tough, but so are hours in most corporate environments these days. If you love a fast paced environment and love retailing, NM is a great company.

Find real professionals to run this store.

The employee discount that Neiman Marcus offerred to their employees was pretty good in comparison to other retail stores in the area. That was a pro.

The downsides are very low salary earnings even though you worked almost 40 hours a week. Another con is how the other employees treated each other and how they would take sales. Other sales associates were snooby, unhelpful, did whatever they wanted while they were suppose to be working. There is no respect from co-workers and so much competition. Don't tell your co-worker that you opened a new NM credit card for a customer. The co-worker will catch a bad attitude towards you real FAST.
Advice to Senior Management
First, hire some younger managers that know what they are doing. Second, a great manager should be consistently praising their sales associates and out on the selling floor with his or her team. Third, managers should never play favorites. Fourth, managers and the executive team should always respect and treat their staff like if they are gold. Without the selling staff, there would be no Neiman Marcus. Fifth, the general manager should make it a point to check up on her management team to make sure they are adhering to all the rules.

Exposure to some of the finest brands in fashion retail, springboard to possible recruitment by vendors, and a tentative awareness by corporate of the importance of social media.
Cons
The commission structure is not competitive with rivals, i.e. Nordstrom; the buying office is skilled in stocking flagship stores but catastrophically neglectful of the other 40+ stores in the chain, inflexible scheduling, regardless of seniority and performance; inconsistent customer service culture, and an incentive structure that is frequently & literally the equivalent of a star sticker on a wall captioned "Yay!!!"
Advice to Senior Management
Understand your identity in the marketplace and the consequent expectations of your customers , make your buying office truly accountable for the success of ALL stores in the chain, administer real incentives and competitive commissions, and quit "conning" customers & sales associates with "opaque" markdown sequences.

the merchandise is some of the best in the world. The buying team and planners have it figured out.

Senior management has a degree of seperation from the sellers. Some dept managers are just going through the motions on a daily basis. There is very little coach and developing of the sellers to get them to the next level.

In my 20 plus years of working with various Retailers, Neiman Marcus is by far the best company to be with for quality of life. They truly care about employees and are flexible & understanding when personal issues arise.

Not currently taking Visa & Mastercard in all stores has a negative impact on our daily business & future growth.

Commission at Neiman's can range from 6% in contemporary clothing 8% in handbags and furs and 10% in shoes and cosmetics. You have a possiblity of selling anywhere from $3,000 to 15,000 per day earning you a very healthy commission. The medical benefits are great as well as vacation time earned. They also have a pretty pension plan.

The down fall of working at Neiman is if anything is returned to the store, you have to paid the commission earned back. So, the more you sell, the more returns you will have. For example, if you sold $40,000 in a week, and your commission was 10%, then your earnings for the week will be $4,000 for week. So, the following week you had about $17,000 in returns, then you owe the store back $1,700. As you sell during that week of returns, the deficit is deducted from those sell.
Advice to Senior Management
I believe, management (Corporate) should take some type of responsibility for items being return and not have the sell associate take the entire hit.

They are very eager to promote associates within the company so there is a lot of room for advancement. d

Many people stay at the company for 20 to 30 years so it may take a long time if you want to advance.
