I worked at Neiman Marcus full-time

    Pros

I loved my coworkers you get to learn a lot about fashion and the designers while you are there. Neiman's is not afraid to invest the money in the education of their employees. It has a great employee discount so that you can wear the things the store sells.

    Cons

It is all 100% commission which makes it a little cut throat at times. Also if you don't sell anything that day you don't make any money for the day.

I have been working at Neiman Marcus full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The only thing worth it in the company are sample sales and the employee discount.

    Cons

Management staff is terrible and there is no room for growth. Pay is extremely low for how much work load and the company is going through lots of changes but never feels to inform anyone so you are left in the dark.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have not once seen my boss come to observe me or show any kind of appreciation. Some of us are working hard for you.

I have been working at Neiman Marcus

    Pros

The EDP training program is great if you are looking to break into the corporate side of the business. Everyone is very friendly both in the stores and corporate offices.

    Cons

The pay is not great. Assistant buyers at NM make much less then they do at Saks. Even JCPenny pays WAY better. While there is opportunity for a yearly bonus and raise it is so small that it is almost insulting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The pay needs to be better and the company should try harder to promote from within. I also don't understand why they recruit from colleges like Standford and not from fashion schools like Parsons, FIT or FIDM.

    Pros

    Lots of overtime
more relaxed compared to other warehouses

    Cons

    Stressful
They tend to hire everyone seasonally so you meet a lot of different personalities
    training could be better
Hours drop a lot after peak season 20-25 hrs/week

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give people an opportunity to advance in the company.

I worked at Neiman Marcus full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Gorgeous surroundings, very upscale, pleasant clientele.Human Resources Dept is very professional . health insurance not the best. and very expensive but they have it.credit union is really great

    Cons

Upper magement is oblivious to the favoritism shown toword some employees.
Initiative is overlooked & lots of creative dedicated & willing to learn employees w/ great attitudes and work ethic fall by the wayside.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement some great leadership, as well as management teams that have their ear to the ground regarding what's really going on with the day to day activities..perhaps implementing an anonymous survey by upper management given to the employees to convey their concerns.
Require that employees (management included ) be required to pay a mandatory gratuity to tipped employees for services.
personal and professional development workshops would be a great resource for the culture of this is employer

I worked at Neiman Marcus full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Your experience will depend on the attitude of the others around you. Working at the downtown Dallas store, I felt like most people were happy and management was encouraging and supportive. Commission based work is hard, but if you don't know that going in that's on you. Really like that they're using more technology.

    Cons

Department management kept changing. Made it hard to develop relationships with them and use them as resources for customers. This is because our location worked well for people in the EDP to get their store experience without moving. Good for them, bad for the retail workers. EDP was harder to get into for people who have already worked in the company as sales people. They want you to have experience as a coordinator instead.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the EDP requirements so that a department management step isn't required- they should shadow them, but not be forced to work in a position they have no intention of staying in for more than a year. Get people in those positions who want to stay.

Technology wise - I see great efforts being made (hello, Smart Mirrors?! Awesome!), but seriously, update the POS system. It was a joke where I was.

    Pros

Great discount, make your own schedule, paid holidays, 401k matching, plenty of autonomy, company paid phone

    Cons

Few opportunities for advancement, upper management is not friendly, commission based pay, little chance to increase salary over the years, pay varies and ability to maximize income is based on your department

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show employees that you value them outside of generic emails, speak to your employees, smile at your employees, acknowledge the employees that make your success possible

I have been working at Neiman Marcus full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Product Specialist in Cosmetics and some jewelry lines are the only non commission positions which allow for a complete focus on customer service... this is best if one is very passionate about their line....after learning the dynamics and personalities and territorialism of established sales people to know whom is or is not good to compete with as it can turn into a shark tank in any department.

    Cons

Balancing assertiveness in taking sales and collaborating....very long and indefinite time periods to work up within the company.... they seem to hire a lot of people from Nordstrom or other stores at higher ranks as oppose to grooming within.
