I worked at Neiman Marcus full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

People still think about the Neiman Marcus that existed when Stanley Marcus was alive so it's great to have their name on your résumé. The compensation they offer is very competitive.

    Cons

They are no longer the great company they once were. I was in a management role there and have many years of industry experience. The culture at NM is very secretive - with associates and customers. There's a lot of "smoking mirrors" about business (ie. saying things are good when business is really terrible). The company is basically working in the red. With the second sale to private equity buyers the company now OWES more than they are worth (according to an article in WWD). They are constantly turning out the same old sale promotions over and over expecting different results. There is no innovation or thinking outside the box. Corporate is obsessed with what their competitors are doing instead of focused on ways to rebuild their brand and generate real sales.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop looking at everyone else! Leverage some real talent inside the company and start the hard work to rebuild your brand. Long term, offering a different extra markdown sale every week is not doing to dig your business out of the hole it's in. It's just making it worse.

Plenty of room to grow if you know the right people.. Hard work doesn't seem to count for much.

I have been working at Neiman Marcus full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Most of the tenured associates are great! They are usually a lot of fun to be around.

    Cons

Management doesn't seem to have a solid grasp on what's happening in the call center. They are begging the slackers to be managers. None of them know what the others are saying/doing. It feels like there is little to no appreciation or acknowledgment for the people who work the hardest.

    Pros

Employee discount, nice coworkers, great location, sample sales, fashion insight

    Cons

Very political. Long hours but you will be rewarded, health insurance is outrageous, pay is very low compared to other retailers based in Dallas.

As an employee and customer, I believe N-M is the original and best RTW high-end retailer in the world.

I worked at Neiman Marcus full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Colleagues' integrity; standard of elegance/excellence. There is fierce competition in any retail environment but high level of intellect and fair pay. Constant insistence on staying six months ahead, both in merchandise selection/purchase and timely delivery of new inventory. Thoughtful assessment of reordering fast-moving stock and marking down slow-moving sku's.

    Cons

For buyers —some overtime, usually on holidays. I worked at Neiman's before all systems were computerized. Writing orders with multiple carbons for numerous store locations was time-consuming. I recall several holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) where I was invited to my boss's home for holiday meal, after which we would write orders up to our knees well into the morning hours. Still, great camaraderie and gratification.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I am no longer working at N-M. When I was, however, I felt the management was stellar, albeit some with great power could be rather distant/unapproachable.
