I have been working at NetApp full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Employee friendly, Beer bash, Snacks.

    Cons

Code is mostly is written in an haphazard manner, no standards followed or maintained. As there is a saying, 'One man's hack is other man day job'; most of the code written at netapp is more of a hack and has no neat design. Netapp's core Os is monolithic: that speaks volumes about the code quality.
    Forceful vacation twice a year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Middle management clueless. Understand how engineers work.

Current Employee - Senior Program Manager in Bangalore (India)
Current Employee - Senior Program Manager in Bangalore (India)

I have been working at NetApp full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Just a few weeks into my job. The Pro that I could notice that the teams have been giving a lot of attention to their work and deliverable. I have not seen a lot of chaos. Everybody seems to be sincere.

    Cons

I observed that to keep the release dates intact employees are being asked to work over weekends. VP level seniors have asked team members to work on weekends as part of communication in all hands meeting.
Program Manager has no Program Management functional team in NetApp. Everyone - Development, QA, Program Management report into Director of Engineering. In my previous companies, Project/Program managers used to have a separate job function with Manager/Director of project/program management leading the team and reporting lines used to merge at VP level. This gave project/Program management function more fire power to get the work done and take independent and neutral decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Though it could be cost effective to have all functions reporting into same director level manager, it makes the organization very functional and not projectized. This prevents the project/program management function to be able to drive things more effectively.

    I worked at NetApp

    Pros

Employee friendly in terms of leaves, work from home options.

Quality of work depends on the team. High achievers are camaflouged by low achievers due to managers inability to recognise talent and hard work

    Pros

    Good Work/life balance
    Friendly people
    Free Snacks/Drinks/Beer Bashes

    Cons

    - Not a good place to start off your career.
    - Most of the time is involved in bug fix. Very less development
    - Too much of work life balance leads to laziness in employees
    - New joinees are almost treated as newbies and not given any responsibilities leading to sense of complacency in them
    - Higher management not proactive and lacking innovation in products
    - Most importantly, frequent layoffs/reorgs created a sense of insecurity in the employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hiring and firing has become a very common activity at NetApp.
People join with a lot of enthusiasm to learn new things and thereby keep the company growing, but when the outlook of the company is not optimistic, good folks also start looking out.

Advice to the management, Please hire only if needed. NetApp is an innovation oriented company. Products differentiate NetApp from others. Look what the competitors are doing and focus on developing innovative products rather than Just Hiring.

Please stop boasting Netapp is ranked in top ten Best Places to Work and try attracting people. There are many other companies out there, which are ranked as the best places but never use it to attract folks
