Stuck in the last decade with very little acceptance to new people or new ways of thinking

    I worked at NetApp

    Pros

    1. The company saw tremendous success in the last decade and so there is a sense of doing what they always did. This works well for business as usual but does not fuel growth.
    2. Like a lot of people have already commented there is a lot of focus around work life balance and treating people well on the surface

    Cons

    1. Promotions on tenure - so for people who have been there for 10+ years. The company is very risk averse. If you are a new comer trying to drive change you will be politically isolated. So be careful.
    2. Employees are treated very well on surface - which results in not getting any bad news about performance and expectations. So you are left in the dark until you find out you are being left behind.
    3. During my tenure there was a lot of hiring and promotion of folks from consultant firms that were really good with "strategy" conversations with very little execution

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a need for gender diversity in leadership in the product operations. The same old boys club is turning the place into an echo chamber. Hiring top exec from a company like Cisco that stopped growing will not help NetApp get its next wave of growth. You need leadership from companies that are growing.

    Pros

You are given a lot of room to manage and drive your business.
Most of the people working for NetApp are genuine and care about what they do.

    Cons

Culture - Lot of talk about NetApp culture, it is all talk, the culture is horrible.
Good O' Boy Network - If your not in it (it's tough to crack into), you will get marginal reviews no matter what your results are.
Great Places to Work - This is highly manipulated. If those chosen, submit high survey results, everyone get's 2 extra paid days off.
Forced Company Shut Down - 2x a year the company forces it's employees to take off. During July 4th week and at the end of the year. When you start, you have to borrow against your future vacation or go unpaid for the shutdown days. The forced taken off days is 7 per year, if you only earn 10 days per year, yep you guessed right, that means only 3 days of vacation remaining.
    Benefits - marginal at best
Sr. Mgmt - It's Comedy Central. They talk a good game, but never deliver. You rarely hear from them and when you do have an all up call, you could swear that it was last years presentation. They promote inexperienced people into Sr. leadership roles. This is a recipe for disaster, it's only a matter of time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

LISTEN to the experienced people you've hired. Their ideas can generate solid ROI. Quit stifling ideas. Sr. Exec's that don't perform yr over yr, give them a package and get rid of them.

I worked at NetApp full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Was once a growing company but is now in transition but still relatively stable. Has a great gym and some decent benefits but nothing else.

    Cons

Turned into large company that doesn't provide employees any skill diversity or opportunity for growth. Typical large company that restrict your skills to decrease marketability if you would want to leave. Made promises they knew they wouldn't keep.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your act together, be honest with employees and trim some of the inept management.

    Pros

You will succeed if you want to, plenty of career growth and opportunity. Work/Life balance works really well for me. Great work environment and facilities

    Cons

Some in position are there because of the quick growth, not because of they are deserving.
To much meeting and not enough doing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees, if you are not going to listen don't ask the questions and push everyone to answer.

I worked at NetApp as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Very laid back company culture. Plenty of opportunities for interns to shine. Supportive environment. The work-life balance as I saw among the full time employees(I was an intern) is excellent. Right company for those of you who just want to settle down and do your job without much fuss or excitement.

    Cons

You have to take initiative on your own to ask for work to do. It is not a very competitive culture.
