I worked at NetApp as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Low level management was superb: A textbook example of how managers are supposed to be. Excellent use of video conferencing. Good resources to make sure the job gets done.

    Cons

Contract was terminated as part of a layoff, and company forgot to inform some employees till after they were locked out. Planning information was not passed down to the employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With the excellent use of video conferencing, there should be better communication over all.

  3. Good comp, some good people, stifled by bureaucracy, group-think, and sluggishness

I have been working at NetApp full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I think compensation and benefits are probably a bit above average for bay area. Not much to complain about there. Vacation accrual a bit slow, but they have more holidays and company shutdown days per year so tend to get a good number of days off. Some nice people and company has a pro-employee culture in terms of operating with integrity towards employees. A lot of hard-working people (but they are working hard rather than working smart sometimes).

    Cons

Pro-employee culture plus a strong since of inclusion/inclusiveness seems to have evolved into a tendency towards everyone feeling like they should be allowed to give their opinion on everything, resulting in a lot of bureaucracy and too much micro-management-by-committee. The result is that it is often difficult to move quickly and decision-making authority can be muddled. Concerning in a company where the industry is in upheaval and things need to change to assure success. Promotion above Sr. Manager level very hard to come-by internally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to focus more on speed and efficiency of execution, faster time-to-market, and encouraging more risk-taking. Company is stuck right in the middle of the "Innovator's Dillema" and needs to act with more urgency and decisiveness. It is not too late, there is money in the bank, and some smart, hardworking people. But boldness and less group-think is required.

I have been working at NetApp full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

It is a nice place to work. People are pleasant and polite. Pay rates are some what competitive. Politics are not nearly as intense as I've experienced at EMC, which is very refreshing. NetApp supports moving around in the company to allow yourself to stay fresh.

    Cons

Like anyplace, there are many. Many people inside no longer believe that NetApp has the product line that is relevant going forward. NetApp response to market forces has been exceedingly slow. Huge gaps are being exploited by every competitor, and many are now looking actively for better opportunities. Because of the exodus of talent, gaps are forming in teams that now others have to cover. That makes your work day much more challenging, but not is a positive forward moving way.

Training is a big issue - it is hard to get what you need or want. Unfortunately a lot of lip service is paid to professional development, but getting it means money, and that is often pulled.

We keep lousy people far too long. Getting rid of dead wood here is next to impossible.

Great ideas get pushed aside constantly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a buyer and maximize the return to investors ASAP. NetApp is beginning the long fade. You made a massive mistake with merging ONTAP and Spinnaker, even though the market has always pointed out that total unification is not what it wants. That decision about 9 years ago, has broken the back of this company. We got lucky when virtualization came onto the scene, otherwise NetApp would have passed on 3 to 5 years ago.

NetApp management is tone deaf when it comes to understanding shifts in the market. You cannot continue to whitewash ONTAP as a catchall for every workload.

NetApp problems come down on one issue: Product.

I have been working at NetApp (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There's free soda in the breakroom.

    Cons

Management is full of hot air. They are 100% forecast focused and have no idea on how to motivate/coach/support employees. Little/No advancement opportunities, although management will tell you they are focused on hiring from within. Comp is below the industry average. High turnover.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I wouldn't know where to begin. For starters, retaining your talent needs to be addressed.

I have been working at NetApp full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

40 hour volunteer time each year
5 weeks of vacation after 10+ years service
Compensation is on par with industry average for Colorado
Super experienced employees with a ton of new opportunity for new college grads. Easy to transfer around dept to dept too so there is some opportunity for growth.

    Cons

First level managers are awful. We do a terrible job of recruiting internally and end up hiring candidates into people-manager roles that have absolutely no business being there (lack empathy, are passive/aggressive, or just don't like people!).

Managements ability to make a decision is painful - takes a long time, and causes much churn. We have yet to release a web-based product as the programs continue to take too long, go over budget, or resources are needed for other revenue-raising products.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Time to shake things up! Your first line managers are causing excellent employees to want to leave. Let's quit having meetings ... about the meetings we're going to have. And let's deliver a web-based solution this time.
