A great place to work if all you care about are superficial perks

    I worked at NetApp

    Pros

Bagels on Fridays, Beer/wine on Fridays, cookies once a month, .25 cent soda.

    Cons

The above were cons for me.

I worked at NetApp as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Professional growth, technical excellence of colleagues. Management generally good, although not always "on the same page" with one another. I worked for a business line that was a corporate purchase and the original functions had not been completely integrated into NetApp even after years, so my impression might not be reflective of the parent organization.

    Cons

Contractors held as a breed apart, no real path for integration or eventual hire. Seemed to be a culture of non-cooperation between divisions within the organization. Not a lot of teamwork, sort of a rock-star mentality that caused a lot of frustration, duplication of effort and wasted work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn that teamwork has a role. Manage your managers. Stop the constant, needless churn in organizational structure - pick a plan and live with it for a year or two.

I worked at NetApp for less than a year

    Pros

The company has good office culture, decent compensation. The company has good training programs for new employees. Everything goes south from there on.

    Cons

Too much bureacracy, no room for creativity

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please be more proactive in removing bureacracy, the management should breed more creativity and allow ideas to grow. Credit should be given where it is due. Treatment should be fair across the board.

    Pros

Good pay, benefits, perks, solid executive management.

    Cons

Middle management politically motivated in shrinking opportunity environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on company goals and customer satisfaction rather than personal ambitions.

I worked at NetApp full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great company to work for if your in the right department. The culture is not what it use to be but it still good. Work-life balance is great again depending on the department. A lot of good people to work with. Good Benefits!

    Cons

The company has moved away from what made it great. For example Business Operations lacks true leadership. Fear used as a tool to get things done. Is more worried about covering up problems than actually fixing them. Some management is quick put a target on your back if your not inline with them. Yes, even if your proactive, solving problems, and good at what you do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Needs to go back to what made NetApp great. Get things done without the BS. If it broken let be known and find a way to fix the problem, stop putting lip stick on a pig.

I have been working at NetApp full-time

    Pros

Good work-life balance. Management team is doing a good job to boost the company to a new portfolio company.
    Easy communication.

    Cons

Breakfast in selected days. No lunch. Spending is restricted so don't expect too much.
Lots of organization change recently. Release cycle is slow.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to reevaluate the benefits because job market has been changed a lot. The company is not competitive as before if things keep the same.

I have been working at NetApp full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

There are still some really good people left. Technology is exciting and quality is improving.

    Cons

Too much negativity in the ranks, too many middle managers with no clue. Too much managing up.
The famous culture of candor doesn't exist anymore. Everyone is in it for himself.
There is no way to advance within unless you weasel or brown-nose into it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When NetApp doesn't make it to top 100 companies to work for in the US, ask yourselves: "Why did this happen? What did we miss? Why are the good people leaving?"

I worked at NetApp full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    1) Good people work here.
    2) Certain departments are flexible in regards to telecommuting.
    3) Gym is nice.

    Cons

NetApp has changed over the last several years. There is a tremendous amount of internal politics, which is spreading through the company like a cancer. The results are apparent by the “Best Company to Work for Ranking”.

I believe that NetApp will fall out of ranking within the next several years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

NetApp is currently a ship without a rudder. Upper Management needs to talk to the workers on what's going on, not middle management. All the political bickering is stagnating the company’s growth and will be its downfall.

I have been working at NetApp full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

NetApp takes being the "best place to work" seriously. Facilities and benefits in California locations and larger sites are amazing. Benefits are great. They offer some training and NetAppU is great.

    Cons

Very large company that is somewhat set in their ways. Certain departments not willing to change/improve. Takeover was not smooth and it was a clash of cultures. I wish we were able to work better together but that did not happen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote on merit and experience. Develop employees better and utilize a better improvement program than what was rolled out.

I worked at NetApp full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Fast-paced environment. Challenging and engaging.

    Cons

Too many changes and re-orgs. Too many priorities and changes in focus.
Management has not been able to move from tactical and reactive back to strategic thinking and solid execution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company is losing a lot of great people due lay offs and because of lack of satisfaction. Employees are not feeling 'the love' anymore. Focusing on a solid plan and execution may help keep the great people stay.
