I worked at NetApp full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

NetApp had a good cash flow, allowing them a nice campus with a phenomenal gym. The pay was above Silicon Valley average based on what I saw.

    Cons

They seemed to have taken their corporate culture from former Sun employees. They grew too quickly and then, realizing their mistake, laid off 10% of the company in 2013, and more the year after.

The engineering bureaucracy had become so convoluted that it was difficult to get anything done on a macro scale in a short amount of time. Everything had a committee, forcing small groups to ignore the rules and regulations to just get things done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop spending so much time congratulating yourselves on being a great place to work -- when you've laid off 10% of your employees, it is, perforce, not a great place to work.

Spend time reviewing engineering processes and decentralize them to reduce the bottlenecks that exist.

There is a lot of engineering debt that needs to be paid. Pay the price and fix the problems in engineering instead of just hoping it will be fixed magically

I have been working at NetApp full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Decent benefits and compensation. Volunteer time provided in addition to vacation time. Great product line.

    Cons

Repeating what another employee posted - it's difficult to grow within the company. First you feel bored in the same position, you become trapped and then become complacent. I think it's more common then mgmt wants to admit. Laid back attitude amongst protected employees does discontent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take an honest realistic look at what's not working and do something about it otherwise the company will go into a tailspin. Partner strategy should be reviewed as it sometimes just doesn't make sense especially when the customer is against it. It seems anybody can hang a shingle outside their door and become a NetApp partner. We need to be much more selective. Do something with the billions in cash in the treasury.

I worked at NetApp as an intern

    Pros

People are friendly, good work to be done. Work/life balance is valued. Have the option of working from home Employees can come and go whenever you want as long as you get the work done.

    Cons

Project was not well defined. I was asked to make decisions and give opinions without enough information. Did not feel completely comfortable with the team as other interns were. A good experience, depends on the manager and team. Interns at headquarters have a more enjoyable experience compared to other sites it seems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Define a project scope in advance and make sure everyone knows what can be accomplished. More guidance needed for interns.

I have been working at NetApp full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Work/Life balance is good. They have strong storage market presence which is good.

    Cons

It's not typical software tech company in bay area. It's a typical hardware company environment where you feel company is too choosy (miser) in bringing up the in office environment. You need to pay for everything - even they stopped giving RSUs. If you are on non-immigrant visa, they don't pay for your expedite processing fees.

    I worked at NetApp

    Pros

5 years back there were a lot if good things happening and people from top to bottom are all working together to make things great. Financial outlook was looking great that a lot of good initiatives could take place. Some if these highly competent employees are still here fighting the battle, BUT........

    Cons

But...., those that are doing the honest hard work trying to turn things around are getting frustrated, and are losing confidence in the company. Annual layoffs not helping, hiring more arrogant industry vet/dumbrears not helping. Most people dont get recognized or rewarded for their crucial supporting roles. Only people making sales and revenue do. This is unfair. Also because of fear of layoff and ensure job security, SMEs horde knowledge and skills so they can keep getting credit for what they excel at. This is bad culture going around.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fundamental internal processes need to be evaluated and be put on priority to fix ASAP if you want this company to go longtetm and have sustainable growth. Get those senior management level people to stop looking at where to get more revenue and look for where to improve streamline process and Support Operations. BEWARE, saving cost isnt always your first solution. Stop the BS sugguestion from big 4 consultants. Stop masking problems with GREAT CULTURE, people will find out sooner or later.

I worked at NetApp full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good pay. Good people. Decent products. Lots of money to stay afloat for awhile, even during tough times.

    Cons

Very long hours. Lots of stress. No work/life balance. No promotion from within. Should spend more time making it a great place to work instead of on all of the marketing of this goal. Not a diverse product portfolio.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to diversity the product portfolio. Promote from within.

Former Employee - Order Management Specialist in Beaverton, OR

I worked at NetApp full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Truly deserves their ranking of one of the Top 10 places to work. There's lots of upward mobility potential if you live in Silicone Valley, Wichita, KS, or North Carolina.

    Cons

No longer an office in Oregon. Would love to continue to work for this company, however they have very limited Telecommute opportunities, and it is extraordinarily expensive to live in CA so relocation isn't really a viable option for most.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you have access to exemplary talent, such as you were presented with in Beaverton, Oregon, don't let them leave your company!

    Pros

Upper management is really taking care of people. They provide excellent compensation and leadership is great.

    Cons

Now, it depends on who is the manager you are reporting to. Your direct manager makes a different on the experience of the company.
