I have been working at NetApp full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great people and opportunities. Great leadership provided by Senior Engineers. The pay is competitive and the benefits are good. Many good people have been attracted to NetApp, because of the "Great Places to Work" ratings.

    Cons

Culture is being eroded by politics and layers of less than effective directors and VPs. Most of the good technical directors have left the company leaving behind technical leaders who are more political motivated than technically savvy.

I worked at NetApp full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good work-life balance, stable place to work (except around quarter-end). Used to be a great culture but lost its way after CEO Dan and CFO Steve left a couple years ago.

    Cons

Lots of the driven, high-achieving people have left. Serious people remain, the people with a sense of humor have gradually left. Doesn't seem to have the same sense of urgency it used to. Lost its soul a few years ago, lost its way toward growth around the same time. Good stable place to work, tho.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know the people in the lower levels of the organization again, and not just the engineers. Find out what people really think about what could be done to turn things around.

I have been working at NetApp full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

An average sized biweekly paycheck. There is nothing else tolerable about this company. This place sucks.

    Cons

Idiotic management in many departments. This company is truly a sinking ship. All the smart people have either left or are currently looking to flee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire incompetent employees. Stop coddling them and throw them out the door.

I have been working at NetApp full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Getting promotion within -3 years is like milking a bull...almost impossible

    Cons

Group politics..if you flatter the manager/senior you thrive. you speak the truth you will be eliminated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop lay offs on the name of restructuring/alignment. Focus on the competition specially from small players .

I have been working at NetApp full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Good work-life balance
Great set of people to work with
Hands off management, just get your work done.
    Great start for a career

    Cons

Too much importance for artificial stuff like great places to work rankings etc which are no good except for marketing
Not too great set of perks, they cut back on lot of good stuff like weekly beer bashes
Too much focus on ONTAP ignoring other BU's and technologies like flash drives. (Almost cult Like) although this is changing very slowly
Not much growth once inside the company compensation or otherwise

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow through on products other than ONTAP. Stop doing 2 releases of products and scrapping them to starting all over again

Also senior management (VP, Sr directors etc)needs to be held accountable for decisions, fire them if they made bad decisions instead of folks under them.

I have been working at NetApp full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Decent salaries. Some good and very bright people are still remaining. Good benefits.

    Cons

The culture has changed completely. Morale is the lowest I have seen it. Lots of rumors circulating. Hoping that things become clearer after the new fiscal year starts. If not, I don't see much hope here. Some good acquisitions have been made by NetApp but the track record in incorporating these products into the portfolio is horrible. Most of those products have ended up being discontinued.
Forcing people to take vacation twice a year for company shut downs is not good for people new to the company because they have not accrued much vacation yet.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of multiple layers of management and useless "tactical" teams... promote from within instead of hiring outside management. There is no career path here whatsoever - change this and people will be more motivated and will stay with the company longer.

    Pros

    people are amazing! flexible hours

    Cons

    sometimes difficult to get promotions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward loyal employees - when trying to get a promotion, don't punish them for an internal move (when one can often receive bigger raises if they left for the same role).

I worked at NetApp full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Lots of opportunities. Actually cared about the well-being of their employees. Positive, challenging, and healthy work environment. I learned a great deal!!!!! Rewarding.

    Cons

No longer innovating. Lacks product strategy and direction, "one trick pony", very demanding

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find someone to merge with to expand market opportunities and grow product offerings. Take an outside look in and "disrupt" your own market for your benefit.

I have been working at NetApp full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Friendly, flexible, good people to work with. Benefits are good. Good work-life balance. Nice family-friendly company events. People want to do well. Management strives to maintain a good culture.

    Cons

Large company processes impede efficiency. Inconsistent middle management. Recent business climate has made rather difficult decisions emerge that impacted ability to effectively perform. We are constantly being asked to do more with less.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too many layers of management. The upper management should find better ways to connect with their employees more personally to complement the good large scale communications.
