I worked at Netstar-1 full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Salary was good
    Interesting Work
Culture was flexible with friendly people

    Cons

Totally dependent of Government Contracts so was negatively affected by the sequester
As with most consulting companies, they are more interested in extending the current contract or getting a new one rather than doing the job right. They are not always equivalent

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With multiple mergers, most of the old NetStar managers are no longer there

A company more concerned with executives filling their pockets vs preparing their employees for success

I have been working at Netstar-1

    Pros

NetStar-1 is a great company to work for if you have the right job. They have great benefits such as 401k match, health, and dental. Very friendly executive staff. They are very flexible with your schedule as long as you perform. It is very corporate like and very political.

    Cons

NetStar-1 lacks the tools for one to be successful. They more or less hand you the keys and tell you to drive. There is no opportunity to grow because all they care about is selling the company. NetStar-1 does nothing to train their employees, they lack structure and direction. There is no marketing innitiative and very minimal salary increases. If you work on the Federal side, you are probably ok, but do not fool yourself and work on the commercial side. They invest $0 in the commercial team. It seems like they have had the same overpaid sales people for quite some time. If you are planning on being an account manager, get ready to find all your leads yourself because they do nothing to assist in finding leads. If you know nothing about selling Cisco, get ready to read articles on line to learn about their products because there is no way they will send you to a training class to learn the product they want you to sell. Considering there is no parnter/vendor relationship, you only have one product to sell, and that is Cisco Systems. Good luck making money considering the market is so saturated. It seems like the executives and management have meetings with "new vendors" yet nothing comes out of it. They still just continue to sell Cisco, rather than focusing on a niche product with high margin. There are a few key people there that take care of all the big accounts, so don't think you will be handed anything because they are too greedy. It seems like they are very selfish and only want themselves to be successful and watch others fail. In a nutshell, NetStar-1 needs to grow up and act like the corporate company they are trying to showcase.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train your employees. Have a career path for the younger employees and take advantage of young people wanting to be successful. Invest some money into the commercial side of the business. Market your company. Have a more structured management staff that are actually managers. Try to have other relationships rather than just Cisco Systems. Find a niche product to sell. Have a real pre sales support team. Reward people when they do a good job. Dont talk behind peoples back.

    Pros

Clients are great to work with. They are smart and hard working, and open to advice and support.

    Cons

Netstar-1 management states that company employees are due great respect as part of the Netstar-1 team, but it does appear leadership is more interested in the short term. For example, the company will not allow working over te nominal 8 hours on some days to take some other days off; rather, if an employee takes a day off, he/she must use 8 hours of vacation time even if the employee already has additional hours left from other days. There are many other examples of Netstar-1 managers showing little interest in employees' work-life balance. . . . . . . . .

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work with your mid-managers to incentivize them to treat their people equitably. For example a small number of people in the organization have the privilege of working from home on occasion. Most don't, and there is no reason this could not be arranged occasionally

I worked at Netstar-1 full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good benefits such as generous 401k match, health, and dental. They are very flexible with your schedule as long as you perform.

    Cons

Executive management didn't seem to care about the employees, just the bottom line. Immediate line supervisors were very supportive, however.

    I worked at Netstar-1

    Pros

Management allows employees the freedom to make good business decisions. Great facilities and really a good team of people.

    Cons

The company is really two entities a federal services contractor and a commercial sales and support organization.

On the federal side, the company has never figured out how to compete with the big companies - through acquisition, a company that formerly was able to do business as a small business now has to compete with the likes of Lockheed, Northrop, IBM, ... While the management team was turned over about 18 months ago, the new players have never been in this type of situation before. They might eventually get at, but at what cost to the investors and employees.

For those taking a contract role - it's just that, a contract role - there might be opportunities for advancement, but remember they have a duty to fill this slot at the proposed salary for five years with minimal increases.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are some great people here, hurt by rapid growth through acquisition. Some people think it's about the messaging and maybe it is, but I believe it's about finding the niches you not only can play in but dominate.

I have been working at Netstar-1

    Pros

Netstar-1 has a lot of job opportunities. The company has a 401k match, dental, vision, and healthcare plans. Employees accumulate hours for time off after their first pay check.

    Cons

The downsides are that it takes a while to get signed up for training classes. It is also hard to get a real pay raise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The managers all have different management styles. I've seen minimal direction to the extreme micro-managing style. The managers have to find a style that builds efficient teams and increases productivity.
