Overworked

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at New Jersey Devils

ProsGreat experience working for a pro org, however even with new management and over-hiring of new staff still poor communication.

ConsTerrible work/life balance. Even with new management, roles are still not defined clearly. With overcrowding of new staff, still nobody knows what to do.

Great experience

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at New Jersey Devils as an intern

ProsYou get to work during game nights and interact with fans, keeps you busy. Access to ice level when your job required it to be.

ConsNo room for growth unless you're a favorite.

Experienced a lot of growth and growing pains with the organization.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at New Jersey Devils full-time

ProsLooking to grow in many areas and are open to both conventional and unconventional ideas. Things have changed since departing the organization including a brand new ownership group and upper management. The change is certainly for the better.

ConsThe benefits and pay structure. Roles were often pushed onto others for long period of time instead of fulfilling gaps in positions. Very time consuming - nights, weekends and holidays (that's sports!)

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to get more formalized processes through HR.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Extremely fun when a sports team wins, just another job when they don't.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at New Jersey Devils

ProsFun, exciting sports environment. At my time there, season tickets were given to employees.

ConsThere is an expectation to work extended hours during the season. Vacation time, and schedule flexibility were extremely limited.

Advice to Senior ManagementRelax.

Great internship

Intern (Current Employee)
Newark, NJ

I have been working at New Jersey Devils as an intern for less than a year

ProsThis was a great internship and I learned invaluable information. There wasn't much junior staff so interns did a great deal of work which abled me to learn much more than I would have at another company.

ConsWorkplace was a bit dysfunctional.

They make working for a sports team seem like the worst job ever

Fan Development Manager (Former Employee)
Newark, NJ

I worked at New Jersey Devils full-time for more than 3 years

ProsObviously get to watch hockey games. Employees get free tickets for friends/family. The location is easy to get to with public transportation.

ConsWhere to start:

- The turnover rate is incredible. Constant firings, no ability to create a culture as so many are let go, and people quickly growing dissatisfied (most leave after 6-9 months across the organization)
- No raises for entry level/mid-level employees, or even a discussion of raise, after years of employment
- They make it very clear that you are not an asset to the company, simply a number.
- No opportunity for upward mobility, even for top performers
- I would strongly advise anyone looking to get a start in sports to turn away from this organization, as they won't aide in any type of career development, simply will be a nice name on your resume

Advice to Senior Management- Respect your employees
- Follow through on promises

Great employees but no direction from above

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at New Jersey Devils full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe employees who work there are all very dedicated, loyal and do the best they can with what they have. It's a great place to get introduced to the world of professional sports. The building is fantastic and the fans are among the most passionate in sports.

ConsThere is no communication between upper management/ownership and the rest of the staff. Employees are constantly being let go or leaving on their own but no new employees are being hired to replace them. It seems to me that the fans are slowly becoming a secondary concern. No real room for advancement unless you are a "yes man".

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunicate and actually get to know what your employees do. If you want to have the respect of the staff you have to start to show them a little respect in return.

Satisfactory introduction to marketing and promotions at the professional sports level

Street Team Member (Former Employee)
Newark, NJ

I worked at New Jersey Devils as an intern for less than a year

Prosexperience in arena and sports marketing
meeting others who were interested in working in professional sports
atmosphere was great, especially since the Devils were the 2012 Eastern Conference Champions

Conspoor communication among staff members at the Prudential Center (security didn't even know that a Street Team even existed)
Street Team was led by a marketing intern; should be a full-time staff member who can give more insight and guidance
no compensation

Advice to Senior Managementbetter communication all-around

Good Experience, Not a lot of direction

Street Team (Current Employee)
Newark, NJ

I have been working at New Jersey Devils as an intern for more than a year

ProsEasy commute, central location for driving or public transportation
Good for a self-starter

I enjoyed my time as an intern, it was a great opportunity to get some entry-level experience in marketing and event promotions.

ConsMore direction from management
More support or acknowledgement
Understaffed at the time, high turnover of interns
Old or outdated marketing & promotions materials

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter communication with the employees

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
