Former Employee – worked at New Media Strategies full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Great client companies, good employee culture, potential for quick advancement, and opportunity to interact with clients at much lower levels than other firms.
Cons – Still recovering from the Chrysler tweet and loss of the account, which has impacted new business flow. High executive turnover in the last year, and over-promising/under-delivery by Sales team, though that is par for the the course with agencies. Pay was lower than average when I was there, not sure if that has chenged.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Pros – Cool projects and clients. The people that work there are amazing and talented so you are surrounded by successful minds. Fun culture and outstanding benefits. Truly a unique and upbeat place to work.
Cons – Not a lot of upward mobility opportunities unless someone leaves.
Advice to Senior Management – Keep your ear to the floor and listen to the lower ranks. The heartbeat of the company lies within the talent. Keep maintaining your awesome culture, it is what sets you apart and makes you GREAT!

Current Employee – been working at New Media Strategies
Pros – New Media Strategies has earned clients you won’t find anywhere else. Compared to other firms, the amount of exposure and opportunities you can receive within a short time can be incredible – you are free to make your mark.
NMS is a place to learn quickly from some of the smartest people with whom you’ll ever work and grow a fantastic portfolio. The culture has stayed true to its work hard, play hard roots while evolving into a full service idea shop. It has a fantastic reputation within Washington, DC and is quickly growing in Detroit, LA and NY with a very promising future ahead.
Recent changes in leadership and responses to staff feedback have strongly benefited NMS’ growth and ability to compete. Employee concerns are respected and internalized. Pete Snyder is a CEO who has shown grace under fire and instilled confidence in his team. NMS management crowdsources ideas to improve the agency and help build career opportunities. Executives have an open door policy and are respectful of staff’s opinions and projects they wish to pursue. Employees are now positioned to receive more opportunities to lead client engagements and grow with their craft.
Cons – Smart people do well here, but you also have to be motivated to produce measurable results. NMS is populated by driven, go-getters. Don't be fooled by the fact that we work in social media. NMS is not a place to play on the internet all day long.
Advice to Senior Management – Stakeholder meetings and all staff summits are important and we love being heard. Don't let the gossip mill run rampant. As we continue to grow, please remember to tap the knowledge of staff at all levels and invest in preserving our culture across many offices.

Current Employee – been working at New Media Strategies
Pros – NMS of 2011 isn't the same NMS of years past. They have managed to maintain the parts of NMS that everyone loves (the culture, the people, the work hard/play hard mentality) and have substantially increased new business offerings and the level of strategic insight that goes into client accounts. 2 years at NMS = about 5 years at any of the bigger PR agencies in terms of what you're exposed to and the opportunities you are given. Plus you're focused in social and mobile. No hotter industry to be in right now.
Cons – It's not perfect - its a growing social media agency which means sometimes there are long hours, demanding clients and tight deadlines. In my opinion, it's still a net reward to work with the types of clients NMS works with in the industry we are in.
Advice to Senior Management – Continue to allow the team to innovate - we've done a good job breaking down some of the traditional barriers over the last year but we have to continually evaluate and make sure we're at the top of our game.

Former Employee – worked at New Media Strategies
Pros – Excellent client roster, robust social media credentials, fun work environment, good for spring-boarding into other agencies. If you like working for the Corporate Executive Board or the Advisory Board Company, you'll like New Media Strategies.
Cons – New Media Strategies has an appetite for recruiting talented social media professionals resulting in a sometimes awkward fit with their largely standardized processes and products. Its not that what New Media Strategies produces isn't valuable. However, working at New Media Strategies is much more heavily production-focused than it is innovative. The company has a few "lifers" that try to stymie needed changes.
Advice to Senior Management – As the company grows, a serious look needs to be taken at policies that inhibit growth/innovation and reinforce cultural biases that exist as a result of ingrained personalities. For instance, a more open culture could help roles become more dynamic and ideas more welcome regardless of seniority, staff level or division. Additionally, investment in technologies can help teams spend more time on value-added services and less on satisfying historical cultural norms. Change at a reasonable pace is fine but don't mistake the motivations of those more interested self-preservation than motivations of those who urge genuine caution for the long-term organizational success.

Former Employee – worked at New Media Strategies
Pros – The company knows how to throw a good party. Generally, people who work there are young and fun. Open, social office space.
Cons – Utterly meaningless work that has absolutely zero impact on the bottom line of clients. Low morale and incredibly high turnover.
Advice to Senior Management – You may have been one of the first players in the social field, but what you do has not changed since then. Get with the times.

Current Employee – been working at New Media Strategies
Pros – There's a young and fun atmosphere at NMS, as well as an innovative mindset that is cultivated across the different practices. The company has regular happy hours and throws some amazing parties throughout the year where employees can relax and reap the benefits of working hard every day. Getting to surf the net unrestricted all day long and exploit the medium that we grew up with is a wonderful perk of the job.
Cons – Just as in every other PR company, there will be unexpectedly long hours some days, and there will be managers who don't 'get it.' Also, not everyone is ready for the Web 2.0 immersion, it entails a technological edge that doesn't cater to all marketers.
Advice to Senior Management – The cream will rise to the top, resistance is futile.

Former Employee – worked at New Media Strategies
Pros – Getting a foot in the door and working with high profile clients in the entertainment, corporate and politics industries. The company offers a fun atmosphere and culture and you often work with smart, nice people. There are perks such as parties and happy hours in a mostly young and energetic environment. It's a good place for people who are just starting out or looking to move ahead in their careers.
Cons – Constant grind. Very repetitive work. It can feel like a factory sometimes and deadlines are always looming. People at the top are pretty useless when it comes to managing the grind. It's a niche business and if you stay there too long you get pigeon holed.
Advice to Senior Management – Hire more people and branch out into more business services beyond core competency.
