There are some good projects, cool products but bad project management

Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Irving, TX

I have been working at New York Air Brake full-time for more than 3 years

ProsFlexible timing
Informal environment
3 weeks vacation
Some good technology
Some good technical people
Tuition reimbursement
Occasional useful trainings
And that's all

ConsPoor pay
Terrible management
No honest effort made to get feedback on the managers.
There are people in the team who can get away with doing no work at all and it's very demotivating.

Advice to Senior ManagementSchedule better. And match the pay with the market standard. Please get meaningful feedback on managers.

Outstanding company to work for in a time when good manufacturing jobs are hard to find.

ProsA very stable company that has been around a very long time. Located in rural upstate NY where the rush of big city life is behind. Good people who are dedicated and desire to do good work and make good products.

ConsBecause of the location business acumen if often weak. Older designs that need refreshed.

Advice to Senior ManagementHigher the best quality people, find new role for those who are note in the right jobs, refresh the aging products and focus on quality parts.

Snake pit for projects

Mid-manager (Current Employee)
Irving, TX

I have been working at New York Air Brake full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat customers that really understand what they want
Start-up feel with 80 employee, room for cowboys.

ConsLack of accountability for resource managers to delivery on promises.
Senior management located in NY inc. head of division, manager of SE, and Sales, only occasionally on-site, Played whack-a-mole lately? HQs in NY.
Senior leadership over-commits group to customers then handoff, no eedback from group on major commitments.
Technical debt is tremendous, monolithic C written without cohesion and high coupling.

Advice to Senior ManagementSeasoned division management with experience in high tech.
Collocated leadership in division, not 1500 miles away.
Separation of personal antics and professional responsibility - no appearance of impropriety.

New York Air Brake Review

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at New York Air Brake full-time

ProsSalary and benefits are great.Three weeks paid holiday plus personal holidays and sick leaves. Overall most of the people are nice.

Cons- This company does not put any emphasis on training. Be prepared to train yourself with little help on antiquated systems.
- There is not enough documentation on old and current products making it difficult to understand if you are fairly new to this company.
- A lot of red tape for everyday work (for a small/ mid size company).
- Given the number of projects currently underway and amount of work we have , the resources are very limited.
- There is very little communication between the departments and upper management.
- Micromanaging,and I mean a lot!!
- Bad location. New York Air Brake is located in a small town . Winter can be unpleasant. (If you have been living in Watertown for few winters, you will know that winter is not a good time to be around here).

Great product, people are awesome, management is arrogant and making bad decisions

Operations (Current Employee)

I have been working at New York Air Brake

ProsGreat team, people are wonderful. The product is very intertesting and enjoyable to work with. Nice physical location and good benefits.

ConsManagement is not grounded in reality - they have overcommitted deliveries and seem either unwilling or unable to recognize just how deep a hole they have dug. In addition, upper management made really bad hiring decisions at the Director and Management levels not once but multiple times...communication from the top tiers to those below is terrible, in one case because the Director has no communication skills or management ability. Also, they generally do not listen to anyone below management level, especially if it is not something they want to hear.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote from the ranks and replace some of the management with people that actually know what they are doing and are respected. Put together a hiring manual for new employees and assign each person a mentor to work with them the first couple of months. Documentation, documentation, documentation!
