Former Employee – worked at New York Blood Center
Pros – Overall the mission at NYBC is great and fulfilling if you are interested in a more humane endeavor.
The people who work there are great human beings and for the most part really care about what they are doing
Cons – As in any company management will be blamed for many problems but in the case of NYBC they unfortunately permeate throughout the leadership.
It is a very reactionary environment where obstacles that should have been seen weeks if not months ahead of time are quickly dismissed and then the organization is surprised when it does not overcome these obstacles.
Recruitment still uses direct mail and paper flyers as large part of its overall marketing mix and barely uses any kind of digital strategies to reach out to its donors. Most of the technologies are outdated and in a goal focused organization this can be frustrating as you are expected to meet these goals with obsolete tools.
Advice to Senior Management – Implement a 360 degree review method. To often a senior staff member will review an employee they interact with on a monthly to bi-monthly basis. These reviews have a great weight as to the future of the employee and it is a much more sound approach to get reviews from all angles in order to gauge someone’s performance. Additionally if these reviews effected the bonus structure that would further the interactions between employees. It is a business but it is also a non-profit and as such adhering to business models seen in financial institutions will not work for the kind of employees that an organization like this attracts.

Former Employee – worked at New York Blood Center
Pros – The benefits are great, 5 weeks vacation plus holidays and sick time. Generous 401K plan.
Cons – The management is unprofessional, uncaring and have priorities all over the place. There is no strong, committed leader at the top and that carries through the entire org. All people care about is increasing blood donations, and unless your job is directly related to bringing in blood donations then you are not a priority at all.
Advice to Senior Management – Have a plan, and execute that at all levels of the organization. Treat your employees with respect, and value them!

Former Employee – worked at New York Blood Center
Pros – Lots of things to do so time goes by faster, most people are nice and easy to talk to. The donors are always humble and know why they do what they do
Cons – small work space, can get noisy at times with other people sitting so close to you. Communication isn't always the best, the peons always know last
Advice to Senior Management – Communicate throughout the company, i don't want to have to listen through the grape vine to know if the rumors are true or not
