  2. The only pro is not actually one due to some of the cons

I have been working at New York City Department of Sanitation full-time

    Pros

It's a fundamental department that is becoming increasingly important as environmental consequences pile up.

    Cons

Only uniformed officers (former sanitation workers) seem to be valued, as they get promotions easily and are paid exorbitantly more than civilian employees, which in contrast have difficulty moving up. Sanitation workers that are promoted into an office environment are not required to have any higher education, which can be blatantly obvious. "If it works, then don't fix it" seems to be the department motto, as they hold onto outdated procedures rather than take advantage of available technologies to increase efficiency and decrease taxpayer expenditure. The department does not actually recycle. I have witnessed this in offices and company garages. The hypocrisy is an outrage.

    Advice to Management

Keep up with current job standards by requiring Superintendents to have Bachelor's degrees. Create more opportunities for civilian employees to earn promotions. Actually recycle.

    - You can make a lot of impact if you're smart and know the right people. - Great work life balance

    Cons

    - Not a lot of room to grow as a civilian. - A lot of unmotivated people tend to work here (not sure if it's better or worse in other city agencies) - Not the greatest IT department
