I have been working at New York State Assembly as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I worked for an assemblyman downstate. Very professional and caring about the community and employees. You get exposure to the politics and legislative aspects of government.

    Cons

Work can be a bit tedious and there's a lot of traveling to civic meetings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give employees more responsibility. Chief's of staff can't do everything.

Full of awesome people; however, don't plan on getting a raise...ever.

I have been working at New York State Assembly full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The Assembly is full of great people. Most everyone I've dealt with is always willing to assist in any way they can. The work is pretty interesting.

    Cons

    - Salary is fairly low, with no hope for an increase. It's a shame, because most people I know love their job here, but cannot afford to stay.

    - No overtime pay.

    - No reimbursement for gas when driving around on official business.

    - Dealing with constituents can be very, very frustrating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs to be an increased staff budget. Maybe locality pay for those in certain districts, or some kind of pay grade system.

The legislators are most likely going to be getting a raise to over 100k soon, and I do not expect the staff to see an increase at all.

I have been working at New York State Assembly full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great vacation time. Flexibility varies depending on the time of year and who your manager is.

    Cons

No overtime. Work days can run 15+ hours during session. Great if you love working for free! Limited mobility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop making people stay for the entirety of session, when the days activities are not pertinent to their work.

    Pros

The people are nice. Fellow employees are very helpful and fun to work with. They are also very professional. Everyone works together.

    Cons

Elected officials have different wants and needs. Most of them are nice and easy to deal with. But everyone knows, some of them are not so easy to deal with.

    Pros

Team-oriented environment with great opportunity for growth. Good pay and enjoyable company events.

    Cons

Balance between work and social life is non-existent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advice to management would be that they concern themselves more with an individual's personal situation.

I worked at New York State Assembly

    Pros

Lots of lovely people, really good experience for anyone interested in politics/government. Networking opportunity of a lifetime

    Cons

Hours can be brutal during some parts of Session. Work flow fluxes dramatically from one week to the next due to, you guessed it, politics. Old computer system can be frustrating

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Update computer systems, stop relying on paper so much. Don't be so steeped in tradition that it battles common sense.

  10.

    Pros

    Room for Advancement
    Friendly Environment

    Plenty of Sick Leave/Personal time

    Cons

I worked at New York State Assembly full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Intense work during Legislative Session, with ability to take compensation time off during summer and fall months.

    Cons

Not much room for upward mobility. You must move elsewhere to access a management position within a reasonable amount of time. There are politics that play into the upward movement, just like any other organization, but this is to be expected.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better training. Expect more from analysts when the legislature is out of session...expect them to be studying any programmatic changes.
