Great first job for high school students, terrible for everyone else...

Sales Associate (Current Employee)
Clifton, NJ

I have been working at New York & Company part-time for less than a year

ProsThe people you work with are usually very friendly -unless it's management
Not a hard job, train easy, learn everything fast

ConsThey do not pay enough for the 5 different jobs you complete at the same time. Register, customer service, fitting room and freight... only $9/hr
No breaks unless you work 6.5 hours or more.
The management has no idea what they're doing..and there's about 4 managers so you do not know who to take orders from because they all give you different tasks
The store layout changes 3 times a week so all the work you did yesterday goes to waste the next day.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep one manager and another assistant manager to take over when the other manager is not there. That's it. Don't have a senior, junior, back-up, and visual manager. Causes confusion and frustration for the sales associates.

Assistant Sales Manager

Assistant Sales Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at New York & Company full-time for more than 5 years

ProsWorking with the customers and helping them pick out outfits is very rewarding And the management discount is very rewarding.

ConsWanting so much done but not wanting to fork over the hours to get it done. Working in retail is already a very tiring job but corporate wants us to do 10X the work with no time to do it in. i hate how corporate is always changing up the sales at the last minute and overloading us with freight but no task hours to get it processed.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop being so stingy with hours.

Proscustomers are usually repeat customers once they shop there

Consthe hours are different every week, would be nice if there could be some consistency. most employees give their availability.

Common Retail experience

Manager, Associate (Former Employee)
Cleveland, OH

I worked at New York & Company full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat company discount, great employees, nice merchandise

ConsCorporate making unfortunate decisions such as one person opening. Outrageous goals for credit to the point of it almost being more important then sales.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet back to the basics of customer service which means more time spent with the customer. This can be accomplished by having more associates on the sales floor and less insistence that customers open a credit card.

Not bad for retail.

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Cary, NC

I worked at New York & Company part-time for less than a year

Pros-Great management in the store I worked.
-Promote from within.
-Flexible with your schedule.
-Work hard, and you will reap the benefits.
-Great people to work with.
-Great job for a college student.

ConsIt is retail - so obviously, you will have a difficult time getting out of the holiday season, meaning if you are not from the area you work (i.e. college student), your time to celebrate the holidays may be cut short.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry not to change your policies often, or make sure stores are practicing the actual intended, written policy, and not getting caught up on "practiced" policy. Customers don't like being told things have changed.

Disorganized company, hard to grow with

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
San Diego, CA

I worked at New York & Company part-time for less than a year

Prosdiscount on products
not hard at all

Consmanagement had no clue what they were doing
not enough hours available
too many associates at one location when it's mostly 1 on 1 coverage

Advice to Senior Managementtrain management better

learnt a lot

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at New York & Company

ProsI worked in a smaller store so I had the chance to become closer and work with my managers a lot. Was my first job and gave me a lot of experience but there are always those managers that play favorites.

ConsMaybe it was just my store and I know every store has its slow season but when slow season came around the managers played favorites until they needed me to do the hard word like floorsets and cleaning the stock room. got very very little hours slow season.

All good comes with a little bad

Sales Associate (Current Employee)
Yonkers, NY

I have been working at New York & Company part-time for more than 3 years

ProsIts very easy work and if you show a little commitment and experience you will have a chance to move up.

ConsIts long hours a lot of times. Your work schedule isn't structured and depending on your managers the work assigned could be too much for such little pay.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep an organized store to make everyone's life easier.
