I worked at NewOak Capital full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A small firm giving employees the opportunity to dig their teeth into as much work as possible.
    Friendly and accessible management.
    The pay was solid.
I learned a ton from the senior technology team there.
Growing and evolving company, always an opportunity to learn something new.
Don't read too much into other people's reviews, if you have an opportunity to work at NewOak, see for yourself!!

    Cons

Work load was heavy but that was on me as well as I got more invested into our projects.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Check in on the employees more to get a sense of how they feel about their role.

I have been working at NewOak Capital full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Nothing really, If I had to pick a pro it will be location probably and the fact that you can say that you work in "Wall Street" impress your friends and such but shortly you will realize that this is all a big lie.

I suffered every single day I was wit this firm (a bit more than a year). At the time I accepted the offer I had the chance to go with other firms and I completely disregarded the reviews on this website so I thought of writing one myself and confirm what other have already stated about this place.

    Cons

The firm is completely unstructured. After six years they are still trying to find their own line of business. The firm is full with people with big egos and the attitude of most of the people there is completely innapropriate for a "formal" firm.

If you are interviewing for MCS you should know that this is the most boring job you can ever find, the people leading this business line will make your life miserable and needless to say there is no room for professional development since EVERY single person at the firm is a Managing Director so basically makes politics within the firm very complicated.

The Advisory side is a bit more interesting and there are two or three very talented people although they are involved in very few deals and I don't see that changing in the future considering the politics of the firm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Definitely managment should stop blaming employees for their lack of management abilities and leadership. Fix your internal problems first. Everybody in the firm can tell how poorly management is because is constantly impacted by bad decisions.

I worked at NewOak Capital full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Pros - If you want to go to happy hour, say that you work on "Wall Street", and get a lease in the NYC area this place is perfect. Anything related to career advancement, problem solving, or anything having to do with a real job simply does not exist.

    Cons

    - Completely disconnected senior leadership.
    - Horrible organization and efficiency standards
    - The technology team referred to as "development" has completely taken over the firm.
    - Creative thinking and taking initiative are discouraged because the technology team is so dominant.
    - Unfathomable amount of politics and bureaucracy for a company that barely has 75 employees,
    - Apparently there is a pressing need to hire dozens of marketing and sales people. Wasting thousands of dollars on employees that will never be able to slel services because NewOak does not have anything to sell.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try and clean up the abysmal mess you have created, if not for the few remaining employees but maybe for your own capital interest. I think NewOak was a great firm at inception, however there is far too much dependence on technology and not on financial advisory, Creating an effective system is fine and it can even help in the long run. However, spending hour after hour developing a system instead of building a book of business is just plain incompetence. Unfortunately at this point NewOak may already be too far gone and simply cannot revert back to its original form. The politics, clashing personas, and favoritism is just unacceptable, this is not Goldman or JPMC where this level of rancor could be tolerated. Cut your losses and sell the firm before you do irreparable harm to the reputations of the poor saps who are still oing your bidding at NewOak.

I worked at NewOak Capital as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

There are still a handful of good people left

    Cons

The company has barely 50-60 people, but has levels of politics seen in much larger organizations. This indicates the inability of partners in keeping bad people out and attracting good talent. Employees are moved to different teams on the whim of the partners with no explanation or regard to the employee's wishes. Morale of the employees or their well being has no importance as that does not generate revenue ( not directly). There has been an exodus of competent employees from the company and all that is left is those who act like they are doing a lot but do not actually do anything except harassing the the few good employees under them.

Unfortunately, these people are also the ones who influence the partners which is what will make it very tough for this company to ever have a good culture or be a place to advance one's career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The only competency of the people giving you advice is their brilliant acting ability to seem intelligent and hardworking. Try to connect better with employees and use your own judgement while gauging them. It will be an uphill task to clean up the mess you have created for yourselves.

    Pros

If you need a job and place yourself, they have a web site that makes it appear you have a real job

    Cons

CEO is a complete detriment to the organization, lacks respect in the financial industry and unfortunately steers the direction of the firm

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rely on others that actually have management and real financial experience in order to manage the firm in a logical and sensical manner
