  1. Expect higher pay to compensate a risky industry

I have been working at NewPage full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Legacy NewPage Management was very supportive and worked to develop employees.

    Cons

Staffing is being cut and layoffs are likely. However, if you hold a position that is not laying off retention and spot bonuses are generous to keep employees from leaving.

    Pros

I've worked for NewPage Corporation for several years in the Maintenance Department. Good pay and benefits

    Cons

Health insurance plans have been downgraded as far as coverage with an increased out of pocket expense. Working overtime can be good or bad depending on your situation

    Advice to Management

Overall management does a good job.

I have been working at NewPage full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The company has good benefits and respectable salaries and bonuses for management employees. There are opportunities for advancement if you know the right people.

    Cons

Financially, the company is not sound, and the paper industry is a declining market. Senior management has made many decisions that have hindered the progress of the company for the long-term.

    Advice to Management

Implementing programs that are very costly such as Manufacturing Excellence, only to then implement edicts that cut maintenance costs to the bone (which are directly conflicting with the ME processes) as a short-term cost saving initiative, will put the company backwards, not forward in the long-term. It is very demoralizing to employees when these decisions are made at the top level.

I have been working at NewPage part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible with a strong work/family balance. Organization generally does what is best for their employees. Benefits and compensation are probably slightly above average. Operations are some of the best in the US and provide quality product that is recognized throughout North America.

    Cons

Being acquired by a competitor who has no idea what they are getting into. Very little faith in the new management, that they will have what it takes to run the company successfully.

    Pros

The employees are great to work with and generally speaking a nice place to work.

    Cons

Leadership is very poor, focused mostly on themselves and their long-time buddies.

    Advice to Management

Make decision for the good of the company and not your own pockets.

I have been working at NewPage full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

In a very low cost of living area, NewPage offers employees at the Luke mill some of the best wages per hour for their hourly employees.

    Cons

The biggest issue NewPage faces is the current status of the paper industry. Constant cutbacks in spending and employment have plagued the mill for several years. Very little of the money generated is reinvested back into the company.

    Advice to Management

Focus on making money. Don't be afraid to admit you don't know or understand something and allow the people who have worked the job for 30 years do it.
