    Pros

    Stable employer
    Great sales team
Value and encourage team-work (regardless of department)
    Community involvement
    Work / life balance
    Wellness programs
Knowledgeable & experienced senior management team

    Cons

Lack of career development - ie: managers - they manage more than develop their reports.
    no formal mentoring programs
    Typical office politics
Pay is frequently at industry minimums
Management needs more engagement with people doing the day to day jobs

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Career development - Implement a formal mentoring program; Push to learn each employee's career aspirations and update that information / understanding on a regular basis; additionally offer insight from management's perspective on potential opportunities based on their views of the individual's strengths, weaknesses and aspirations.
Implement "Employee Engagement" surveys, at least bi-annually, to determine employee satisfaction - level of challenge, rate of pay, opportunity for growth, etc.

    I worked at NewPage

    Pros

    Straightforward, aggressive business philosophy
    Salaries very competitive
Some very good and capable people in middle management

    Cons

Very poor communications - information is power and many don't want to share.
You're on your own - sink or swim - little to no mentoring and goals are not clear.
They have something called 360 Degree Review, which is no more than a method for others in the company to criticize you and do so anonymously. What a morale killer!

I have been working at NewPage

    Pros

Good pay for the area, but in a more competetive market, it is not a good place to work.

    Cons

Benifits slashed, no raises in 3 years, bullying management that hire incompetents.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This WAS a great gcomapny when it was Mead. Nothing but down hill since.

    I worked at NewPage

    Pros

NewPage paper mills are first class. The distribution network is customer focused and responsive. Headquarter facilities, benefit package and community involvement paint a very positive image for NewPage in the Dayton area.

    Cons

Senior management appears to struggle with the realities of people issues. Denying people issues rather than addressing them will eventually lead to a "what happened?" day. The commodity paper market is shrinking and many doubt that it will ever return.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management should avoid the trap of listening to the loudest voice and direct their attention to meaningful results. They sometimes come from those that quietly give security to the business through consistent, accurate work.

Former Employee - Process Engineer in Wisconsin Rapids, WI

    I worked at NewPage

    Pros

The mills have very good people who work hard to do the right thing. Very strong technical capabilities in the field.

    Cons

Senior leadership has very strong opinions on what it takes to run the business and squashes dissenting view-points. Not the open environment that they profess. You'll get whacked for speaking truth to power.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop managing by lists. Take the ISO-9000 approach and identify what's important, what processes deliver these results, and focus on the people and requirement of the processes. Stop trying to manage activities from headquarters.

    Pros

strong in thei industry. Devoted to being the best they can be. Opportunity to improve professsional competence. Many highly visible positions.

    Cons

Senior leadership in my area was not strong enough. They had theknowledge, but not the decision making abilities to help the company/

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the people in the trenches when it comes to decisions that will affect large groups of the company.

I have been working at NewPage full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great six sigma culture that drives improvement and change as well as strong emphasis on customer satisfaction. Employee morale is positive as NewPage continues to meet sales and profit goals, receive bonus payouts, and maintain market share. NewPage has a consistent practice of promoting from within.

    Cons

The recession made it really hard to invest in employee development for from 2009 to 2011.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Expand college recruiting and employment development programs so that more supervisory/management positions at the mills can be filled internally.
