I worked at Newark Public Schools (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I worked with special needs children and that is my passion. Being a single parent i was off on holidays to accommodate my children's days off

    Cons

No job security, benefits, or guarantee to become a permanent employee. I worked with the board since 2005 and instead of seeing improvements for personal aides there was a tremendous decline.

    Advice to Management

Put children first and stop making education political and all about the business

    Pros

One of the best reason to work for this company is to let the children know there are people who really care about them and want to see them prosper in life.

    Cons

The politics is was killing our school system it was never like this before. Now that charter school programs have stepped they make it seem like traditional education is not beneficial to our children which is not true. Some charter schools are overwhelming for our children, some are actually on the same scale as traditional or lower. Parents way your options

    Advice to Management

Please put the children first. lets get back to traditional education for our children.

I worked at Newark Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The childrens' needs are what truly kept me going. They made the job rewarding. No day was ever the same. They really need adults who care for them and have their best interests at heart. Im not going to lie the competitive salary was also a plus.

    Cons

Lack of direction, good leadership, fair practices to name just a few about the district. Nepotism runs rampant in the administrative buildings and schools. In my years, Ive seen people who qualified but were not certified and certified but did not qualify for select positions. And guess what the parents and tax payers were none the wiser. Social promotion played a huge part in most of the high schools because administrators threaten teachers with bad evaluations and smudge reports just to meet state requirements for school grants and keep their cushy jobs. What's funny is more than half of the admins or anyone in their right minds would send their OWN to any of the public schools. Facts: At my former school, the principal and vp were both removed quietly from their posts for embezzling school monies. One year less than 1/4 of the graduating class of 130 students were accepted to a 4 year college. Public schools are closed and charter schools are opened in its place for a profit to its stakeholders and savings for the state.

    Advice to Management

If you dont fix the problems at the elementary level, how can it be addressed at the high school level? Stop selling the people out just so you can maintain your well manicured lifestyles. You're serving the public at whose expense?

    Cons

Extremely high turn-over rate of staff Lack of clear direction Non-existent mentoring for new staff Departments drastically cut funding, which results in no where to go for assistance from central office

    Advice to Management

Nothing will change until the current superintendent is dismissed
