Pros
get some experience within a short period of time
Cons
working overtime and during weekends without any compensation
Advice to Senior Management
four years in a row the same advice of improving communication is passed by employees in a survey.... sadly, without any results
Pros
Rock solid software. Engineering truly embraces the open source paradigm. You will be exposed to a large number of customers with a variety of software/hardware architectures. You will have the opportunity to work some of the brightest people in the industry.
Cons
With HQ based out in Dublin, Ireland communication with your counterparts is extremely challenging. The 8 hour time difference can make it almost impossible to get any decent amount of work done. Management does not believe in the appropriate balance of work and life. It is highly likely you will be working weekends to satisfy promises made by sales and project management to customers.
Advice to Senior Management
Establish realistic expectations with your customers. Encourage cross departmental training. Allow employees to actually take time off when they need to. Do not make promises to your customers that you cannot keep.
Pros
Interesting group of people and a happy atmosphere. Company does have a limited number of social events yearly which are quite good. Flexitime was not explicitly provided, but generally this company is flexible when it comes to time management.
Cons
The organization is flexible with employee time requests, but requires them to be flexible in return.
Can be a frustrating place to be at times because the organisation is often poor at managing customers.
Poor renumeration for out-of-hours and on-call work.
Lack of procedures, information sharing and oversight sometimes leads to slapdash operation of existing customer sites. True of both the development and operations groups. Customers become annoyed.
