I worked at Newmont Mining full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Many, many good people. Not all, but many.

    Cons

Absolutely no leadership. The disconnect between the 'head' and the 'hands' is so great as to be difficult to fathom. Laughable if it didn't impact hard working folks - they keep having layoffs of 'the little people' but keeping full cadre of 'executives.' Without workers, what is all that management managing/

    Advice to Management

Hang out the for sale sign if you can't run the business like you wish for it so succeed.

I have been working at Newmont Mining full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, though they continue to erode. Depending upon the department and manager, some are much better than others. Stay away from IT and accounting. Terrible leadership! If you can even call it that.

    Cons

Terrible atmosphere of fear, retaliation, lack of accountability, lack of progress. CIO literally yells at people, and acceptable since there have been numerous complaints to HR...IT dept is clueless and people are so far over their heads it's absurd. The egos are unparalled, but without cause or reason. People in upper positions act entitled, rushing to fix things for the execs, but leave the regular people to fend for themselves and without resources or tools.

    Advice to Management

Fire you whole executive staff and start over. You hired a CFO who had been fired, then she promoted the guy who overran the SAP project by 350% and has no idea what's going on in the company, but none of the execs do, they just stay in their glass castles and beat to a different and far superior benefit and payroll drum.

I worked at Newmont Mining full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good people, good work environment, keeps abreast of latest trends in work management, good benefits Strong business processes.

    Cons

Became a larger organisation during period of increasing gold price, with many roles not necessary. Large Head office and regional offices duplicating effort and diluting direction. Due to detailed of business processes can lead to lack of responsive to opportunities.

I worked at Newmont Mining full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The benefits are extremely good, which makes it difficult for employees to leave, even when there is nothing left for them to do and nowhere for them to go career-wise.

    Cons

There are WAY too many senior executives - and they continue to hire more. That could be a result of the existing executives being extremely poor at running the company. However, hiring more is not the solution, cleaning house is the solution. The mining industry is on the decline, so there is less and less work for the employees to do, so the company is WAY over staffed for the work to be done. That also means there is little to no career path for those that remain.

    Advice to Management

Trim the fat now, starting with the management ranks.

I have been working at Newmont Mining full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are always interesting projects and opportunities to learn and grow on the job. The workforce is highly intelligent, and they care. We put out quality, leading edge work in many spaces

    Cons

The Board of Directors and Executive Team are twitchy - the tides of where to head seem to change frequently (~18 months). We've done layoffs around the world for the past 3 years. We have a hierarchical culture that looks for senior advice and go-ahead, unfortunately, with a fair amount of fear underneath of it.

    Advice to Management

Consider what picture to paint of the company 5-10 years from now. We're very short term minded. Focus on the behaviors that will be productive and build relationships.

I have been working at Newmont Mining full-time

    Pros

Great pay, great benefits, great PTO, 9/80 work schedule Some people are really decent, hard working, smart people

    Cons

-Too many organizational structure changes. -Communication could be better between groups and just in general. -The layoffs have been rough for some people. Mostly for the hard working people. These are the people that have the potential to move forward in their careers and accomplish great things at this company. Unfortunately, some of these hard working people are the ones that will probably leave to do exactly that, because they're so bogged down with other work that they can barely do the jobs that they were hired to do. It's fine to do this for a while, but when there's no light at the end of the tunnel, people will eventually leave. On the other hand, these significant layoffs did not scare the slackers enough to actually change their ways, and they're allowed to get away with it which leads me to my advice...

    Advice to Management

Fire people. When mediocre people are allowed to stay for years by apparently incompetent managers, it doesn't help anything really.

    Pros

Newmont has weathered the storm as well as anyone in the industry. Really good people.

    Cons

Tough time for mining. Layoffs and budget cuts make the job more difficult.

    Advice to Management

Keep people trained and progressing. They're doing more with less, so give them a reason to stay.

I worked at Newmont Mining full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good compensation package Lots of learning opportunities

    Cons

lack of coherent organizational structure work-life balance very much a relationship driven organization cultural and gender diversity was an issue (may have changed to the better now)

    Advice to Management

Streamline work processes and clarify roles and responsibilities among departments, regions and consequently positions. Matrix organization is not an excuse to have too many overlaps and even more gaps in responsibilities which make increasingly difficult to move projects forward. Do something about the "chiefs" to "Indians" ratio - so many "directors" who never managed a single person let alone departments and/or functions. Good luck and keep growing profitably!

    Pros

Office culture has shifted from mining veterans to young, high caliber people that creates a collegial atmosphere. Great opportunity to work across functions at Corporate and gain experience with the option to travel worldwide and for expat placement.

    Cons

Limited work-life balance and political power plays are common.

    Advice to Management

Offer excellent pay and benefits, which some refer to as golden handcuffs. They should take a note from Netflix on people management to retain top employees and eliminate mediocrity.
