I worked at News 12 Networks as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Family atmosphere, room to grow. Upper management and News Director always have an open door policy. They look for people who are passionate about hyper-local news. Lot's of transparency.

    Cons

None that I can think of.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the family environment and don't get stuck in the traditional way of creating news. Continue to evolve with the changing media landscape.

I have been working at News 12 Networks

    Pros

It is a small news station so you can definitely learn a lot. There is a lot of hands-on experience and you are able to try out different jobs to see what you like. For instance, I am a video editor but was able to try out being a photographer, field producer and promotions producer.

    Cons

From the General Manager down they do not create a positive working environment. No one smiles or says "hello." There is no camaraderie or "team" atmosphere. There is also little to no room for advancement and it is clear that the on-air talent is viewed to be much more important than any of the technical jobs. There is also no accountability. A person that does half the work as me would get the same raise as me. There is also no standard for the quality of work we put on air. You can have blue video and we would air it, and you wouldnt even get in trouble for it!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would suggest that you create a more open and positive work environment where everyone (men, women, on-air and technical staff) is treated with the same respect. I also think that you should focus on keeping the employees that work exceptionally hard for you.

I worked at News 12 Networks

    Pros

Interns are able to use the company's equipment and go out in the field with reporters. Reporters are very helpful and allow full participation. Employees in the newsroom are very personable and helpful.

    Cons

Getting stuck at the assignment desk is the worst. Most boring part of the internship. Managers weren't always the friendliest and a lot of office politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow interns to get more involved at the assignment desk. Give them the opportunity to learn different departments instead of just keeping them stuck behind a desk.
