    Great internship experience

I have been working at Newsday

    Pros

It was a place that really cared about its interns- we were pointed to great housing basically across the street from the building. Weekly intern dinners with awesome reporters and editors. Loved the free bagel Saturdays. I had a great relationship with my two main editors, and got good feedback and good assignments.

    Cons

None. Really had a great experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider hiring even more interns each summer!

I worked at Newsday full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pay was excellent for similar jobs on Long Island.
Benefits were also competitive if not higher for the island.
Great commute if you don't want to commute to NYC.
Some good people to work with/for in a company this large.

    Cons

Many have "old-school" mentality and play favorites among subordinates. Few work hard to cover the rest who coast through the days.
Layoffs every year (especially around December) that creates an unease of stability. Yet overworked in many depts b/c of such a slim payroll. Bad decisions made by uppers & ad sales in affect trickled down to loss of personnel.
Upper-management is very disconnected from its workers when it comes to goals and the day-to-day flow in the office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Become a more transparent company & communicate. So much is learned through the whispers in the halls and smoke stations rather than by management. Also, be more creative with business opportunities. Newsprint is a dying market and to stay competitive, it needs to be innovative.

I worked at Newsday full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Terrific people to work with and a broad range of positions make it a very exciting place to work.

    Cons

Many changes in recent years have made staying there a challenge. Still good benefits despite leaner economy and not a growth industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Foster more team spirit. You will get more productivity.

    Pros

Awesome tradition and resources, fair compensation, smart people, good exposure

    Cons

Not concentrating on doing amazing journalism or cutting edge opinion, everyone is just trying to survive
Brutally bad website design and functionality
No news sense on web team at all

I have been working at Newsday part-time

    Pros

The entry pay is great for part-time work and a raise is given every year you work there. It is an easy job to retain for a long time as long as you are a productive worker.

    Cons

They aren't very flexible in terms of choosing your schedule. Our union isn't very strong and I have heard that employees who have been there for years were forced to take pay cuts in the past. Very LOUD work environment. The job is pretty repetitive with no real change unless you are trained to drive one of the PIT's.

I worked at Newsday full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The medical benefits are ok, you do receive free cable. Vacation and PTO days are accumulative, about 15 days in total.

    Cons

Management places an unreasonable amount of pressure to their salespeople. You are constantly required to bring in new business. The feeling of being fired at any time is the overall feeling of their sales team. No stability in this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop placing an unreasonable amount of pressure on salespeople. Lead by example.

I worked at Newsday full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Location, on site (dirty) cafeteria

    Cons

Lack of communication, management plays favorites, no perks, dirty building

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to find and nurture the real talent in the office, rather than who makes a good drinking buddy.

I worked at Newsday full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

friends & family rate on home delivery

    Cons

    turnstyle executive management
    'old boys' club
    random layoffs

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

New ideas won't kill you - they could actually help save the dying generation of newspaper readers. Maybe if some of the senior executives actually LIVED on long island, they would have a better appreciation for the paper and it's employees. hold people accountable, stop the finger pointing and get it done.

I worked at Newsday full-time for more than a year

    Pros

They have a large and smart team, so you can learn from you co-workers. They also have pretty solid benefits, including perks like sending their team members to annual conferences or allow them to get additional training outside of work.

    Cons

Their web team has a high turnover rate, because they are competing with NYC newsrooms. The commute, if you live in the city to Long Island, can be a bear.
