    Pros

First of all, there were around 80 other interns and summer students starting at the same time, so lots of group activities throughout the summer and you meet a lot of awesome people. Every student has a manager looking after them and mine was very helpful. I personally got an amazing project that was quite challenging and took me the whole summer. Also, competitive pay for sure.

    Cons

Some of the other summer students found that there wasn't enough work for them so they ended up bored a lot of the time.

    Pros

    - Professional work environment, flexible work hours
    - Opportunity to learn from industry professionals
    - Modern technology and software used in analyzing reservoir properties

    Cons

    - Very few summer students hired as full time employees
    - Not a large enough company to achieve their goals in Shale Gas and Oil Sands. Resulted in takeover by CNOOC

    Pros

Large company so as always, one's opinion depends on which group one is working for. For me...

Nexen treated contractors much like employees offering many benefits normall reserved for employees such as concierge services, access to health facility (which is one of the best centers in Calgary) and matching charity donations. Lots of smart good people to work with there and they were really open to my suggestions and allowed me to be pretty flexible in my design and framework choices.

    Cons

Currently they are going through some major company wide re-org and as such, the place is a bit unorganized. Given some time I think they have potential if the right senior managers in put in place.

    Pros

Good Salaries, benefits, work schedules, and vacation time.

    Cons

Not the same company after the takeover by CNOOC. Major job cuts, budgets slashed, and Chinese management now being put in place.

    Advice to Management

Unless you provide a career path to upper management for Canadian born employees you will lose the future of this company

    Pros

Lots of great people to work with and now with the restructuring more opportunities for the younger employees to grow their careers.

    Cons

Loss of experience with the restructuring and senior management more detail oriented than strategic. The talk and walk of 'leadership' among senior management is not aligned.

    Advice to Management

Nexen has always been a company with great integrity. Ensure that this is not lost going forward under the new owners

    Pros

    Benefits Package
    Flexi Fridays
People mainly a good group of people

    Cons

    No Clear focus
Middle Managers do not really know what their staff are working on some openly admitt to doing nothing
Pet projects seem to be worked in under the radar without following process. Often as a result they are not strategically aligned with other projects
    Lack of accountability
Redundancies likely in UK during next 6 months
People scared to speak up as those who have tried seem to leave suddenly.
Too few workers getting extremely overloaded. Can appear as though 5 managers to 1 worker.

    Advice to Management

Really look at the issues facing company.
Too many employees/contractors have been brought in for specific work and been absorbed into head count.
Question middle management about what their staff is doing do they really know.
Too many people think sending email is a job.
Tackle the culture of spin doctors who make self promoting their main agenda. Actual look at what they have achieved. Not what they have taken credit for.

    Pros

Nexen has a lot of good people. There are a lot of long-term employees there, those with 10, 15, 20, and 25 years of experience. The benefits package is very good.

    Cons

These days (2014) Nexen = change. After the CNOOC acquisition a great number of employees left of their own accord, with a large chunk out of middle and upper management. Since then there have been significant layoffs. As a result reporting structures are completely turned around and no one really knows what's going on. Morale is very low. HR is currently a bull in a china shop, and showing very little sympathy for valid concerns. I had some integrity concerns that arose prior to my termination.

    Advice to Management

Things may need to change in order to streamline operations, but don't push for change just for change's sake. Recognize that gutting a company or even a department also means losing excellent employees. HR needs to assist in the change by being helpful, sympathetic, and professional, rather than acting as the emotionless executioner.

  10. Generally a great place to work, strong emphasis on integrity. Big changes in the last 3 years lots of employee turnover

    Pros

Good compensation. Flexible benefit packages, compressed work week options (couple of fridays off per month in exchange for slightly longer days).
    Useful in house training.

    Cons

3 yrs of change and uncertainty have taken a toll on employee morale. Lots of retirements have opened up promotion possibilities but the company has also contracted due to selling off domestic properties.

    Advice to Management

Continue the emphasis on the core business of producing but don't abandon the socially responsible values.
