    I worked at Nexen

    Pros

As far as Canadian oil and gas companies, Nexen is one of the best. They act with integrity, conduct their work in a socially responsible manner, and recognize that their employees are one of their greatest assets.

    Cons

There appeared to be a considerable drop in morale over the last year or two, probably attributed to less than stellar performance of a few major projects. With some changes to executive level management, I can see morale improving.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's no big secret that several projects are underperforming. I think it's time to fess up and re-align the company's goals and expectations.

    I worked at Nexen

    Pros

I was a contractor with Nexen, I found it relaxed, easy to get along with people, fun team, good company location

    Cons

    Stressful at times,
Pay as a contractor should have been better, but I think that was more the recruitment companies fault
Management jumped up and down at lots of small issues
IT managers needed to be a little more understanding in terms of technical competence

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of some layers of management. Seems to be managers for everything.
Oncall pager is a real pain - needs to make better use of the outsourced vendor.

    I worked at Nexen

    Pros

Generally a very positive place to work. Company had solid ehtics and principles and tried to live by them. The people were good and decent and always tried to help. Stock performance was usually quite good. Company has a solid future.

    Cons

Bureaucracy. Slow and ponderous to make change sometimes. Believed itself too much and wasn't critical enough of its processes. Needs to take a hard look at some of the senior managers from outside their paradigm of being the best company in Canada.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Deal with the poor morale beginning to brew within the rank and file.
