  1. Competent team, but tedious work

Former Contractor - Data Curation Scientist () in Cupertino, CA

I worked at NextBio as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

The managers were approachable and relatively flexible. (Upon request, I was able to work from home with relative frequency.) The scientific team was competent and knowledgable.

    Cons

The structured training was minimal, though questions were answered when asked. The work was tedious, but this was the nature of the work (basically data entry, but requiring a high level of scientific literacy and understanding.)

  2. Great Product, bad management

    Pros

Great product and great scope of the product

    Cons

    Poor upper-level management, hierarchical structure

  3. A chance to foster research and execution skills and gain insight into the clinical genomics industry.

I worked at NextBio full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Collaborate with knowledgeable junior and senior scientists in an industry that has an impact on human health. Enjoy going to work. The environment is energetic and easy going. Gain skill that will help you find career opportunities in the genomics industry. Research clinical genetic studies and sometimes learn about exciting rapid developments in a variety of human disease. Work independently with a flexible schedule.

    Cons

If you don't have a masters or P.H.D. (and in some cases even if you do) the very rare, longterm career opportunities tend to pay salaries that are below average for the required degree. If you only have a B.S. see this job as a paid internship (if you see it that way this is actually not a con). Though senior management is very friendly and easy going they are rarely straight forward. It is uncomfortable discuss performance reviews and compensation. There is no schedule for payroll for non-employees so you will be pleasantly surprised every 2-4 weeks!

    Advice to Management

Senior management is inspiring, energetic, intelligent, friendly and fun! Make sure each individual knows where they stand and what to expect throughout their entire experience at NextBio no matter how long or short it is.

I worked at NextBio as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

It's a smart group of people providing a needed service for the research community. Management is friendly and approachable.

    Cons

Some of the work is not very exciting. Better tools were needed when I was there, and hopefully those have since been implemented.

    Advice to Management

Hire full time staff instead of contract workers. It's a better way to keep employees happy and retain good people.

    Pros

Interesting vision, and important work. Good relationship between engineers and content developers. Good communication within the company. Management has good experience in start ups, and biotech.

    Cons

A lot of hiring of consultants. It is not clear whether the company will be able to support a permanent staff at the size that it would like to.

    Advice to Management

Don't grow too fast, stay focused on the product.

    Pros

Free lunch and snacks Good leadership Looking to ride the next big wave

    Cons

The code is a mess, poorly documented and in one massive project Scrums can sometimes feel unproductive

    Advice to Management

Love the direction of the company, it can make a great impact on healthcare. So keep it up. Consider reorganizing the code. In the rush to get fast iterations, the project is just too big and difficult for anyone to wrap their head around.
