    Pros

The pay and benefits are excellent. I would agree with the statement that it is a great place for stable, long-term employment.

    Cons

Very bureaucratic and not innovative whatsoever. Limited upward mobility for certain groups.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Award salary and positions based on merit and not previous positions. Build a ladder of promotions and raises so that people are incentivized to improve and not watch other less-qualified co-workers advance.

I have been working at NiSource full-time

    Pros

I have a great boss who is family-oriented. I think there's a lot of transparency and communications are excellent, at least within my department. There is flexibility in terms of work schedule and opportunities to work from home for many groups. I don't travel frequently which is uncharacteristic for my role (but good for me). The company is always looking to improve where they can, and this mentality comes top down from upper management, so it's generally taken seriously. Office culture in Houston is great...lots of young people and constant activities planned. Casual dress every day now. Great place for highly motivated, disciplined, intelligent and fun people! Not a good place for slackers....these people work hard to play hard. Training and development in my department is taken seriously, even for those who want to leave the department or the company.

    Cons

Not all groups are like mine...so not everyone has this experience. The HR department could use a little work...they don't seem to have their mess together half the time. Benefits are just "ok". Every location has a different culture, which is fine, but you need to understand this when applying.

I worked at NiSource full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great pay, great benefits and vacation plan, 3 weeks after 1 year. Promotes from within. No micromanaging, very laid back. Great place to retire from.

    Cons

First and foremost the USW Union runs the company and that's no joke. If a supervisor or manager holds anyone accountable the union bands together to force that person out. Management is at their mercy. Because they promote from within (except executive management who generally come from Duke Energy) everyone is constantly moving around and as a result there are no established procedures or rules. Departments push for additional union manpower but their current manpower puts in about 4 hours worth of work in an 8 hour day. They don't put any money into the companies infrastructure or buildings unless it's the generation stations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop moving management around so often. Develop and implement policies and procedures so employees can be held accountable.

I worked at NiSource as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The hours are great because nobody puts in any work over 40 a week. Fridays are especially care-free. The people are helpful and answer your questions. They do a good job of assigning work to their interns.

    Cons

History of firing a lot of people and then not hiring enough people to make up for the lost work.
Overall lazy workforce ready to retire.
