I have been working at Nikon full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The biggest thing about Nikon is the brand. The brand has been around for a long time and for a while delivered on great quality products. Their DSLR products are second only to Canon and their point-and-shoot cameras are successful thanks to Ashton Kutcher TV advertising.

    Cons

The combination of a Japanese run company with a very stagnant US workforce results in a serious lack of innovation and forward thinking necessary to ensure Nikon a future after the inevitable demise of the camera industry. 2014 brings a 3 year stock low and a continued serious decline in the camera market yet no indication of an alternative future. Like Kodak it is headed to be a company that was.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring new blood into the ranks. Allow for non-Japanese management to take some of the leadership roles. Invest in local R&D. Move fast, take risks and search for a better future now before it's too late.

I have been working at Nikon full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The compensation is very competitive and your co-workers are very intelligent. You are on the cutting edge of the latest photography equipment and the pace is very fast. You must adapt to working interdependently but you have a fair amount of freedom as well.

    Cons

There is little balance between work life and personal life. You are expected to be available at all times and often at a moment's notice. The hours are long and there is often little communication from management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have some consideration for the time it actually takes to do this job and try to balance the company needs with the needs of your employees.

I have been working at Nikon full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, great products, great people within the departments.

    Cons

Leadership is lacking. Politics rule over common sense with big decisions. Personal quests for power common. Attitude of self over team is seen often. Compensation is lacking. Transparency is often hard to find.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Exercise effective leadership by proactive communication with those in the line of duty. Seek to truly understand what actual roles and responsibilities are. Show genuine concern for employees through actions.

I have been working at Nikon full-time

    Pros

Great work environment, internal upward mobility encouraged. Excellent benefits and opportunities for those who work hard and take their jobs seriously.

    Cons

Work/life balance is nearly impossible. As is typical with a Japanese company the job is very demanding, hours are late and your work becomes your life.

I have been working at Nikon

    Pros

    Great Brand and Products.
Potential to work on great assignments with good outside agencies.
Good perks and benefits including company parties, free tickets to Mets and Jones Beach Concerts.
One of a very few companies still offering employee retirement packages.

    Cons

The tenure of most of the employees means that there is consistent resistance to change and it is virtually impossible to bring new initiatives and ideas into the company.

Most of those employed at Nikon for more than five years would find it very hard to find employment elsewhere, they are stale and are not up to date with modern business practices.

The overal environment is very negative, especially across the divisions. There is too much resistance and competition between the groups to maintain the status quo that team collaboration is virtually impossible.

As is typical of a Japanese company there is a glass ceiling for most employees - all upper management are recycled from Tokyo and not selected from the US staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leadership comes from the top - provide employees clear direction, goals and objectives.
Clean out the lowest performing 5% of employees per year. It will make the world of difference.

I have been working at Nikon

    Pros

    Great products
    Known and proven brand
    Good benefits

    Cons

Brutal - unrealistic at time - deadlines
Decision making is not it's strong point - which leads to the above mentioned deadlines
Work - life balance isn't very good
Loyalty asked for but not given back in return
Pay is rather low for the level of responsibility demanded
Politics is worse than Washington, DC - perspective employees beware

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Empower your people to make decisions
Hire more people to get the job done
Work on the work-life balance - the demands - are unrealistic
Value your employees for what they offer - whether they are there 1 month or 10 years

I have been working at Nikon

    Pros

Stable environment with solid benefits. The company does do nice things for their employees, birthday presents, baby blankets for newborns, Health Day, bring your kids to work day... in the summer they raffle off concert tickets to Jones Beach and Mets tickets... preference does go to "favorites" but that is to be expected in any work place. As long as you are a competent employee your job is pretty safe and the environment and people are pleasant.

    Cons

Standard office politics... also because employees stay so long and the company is "stable" rather than "growing" there is little room for advancement. Morale could be low at times.

I have been working at Nikon

    Pros

Some of the perks you can get, great products

    Cons

No communication between departments. Hard to get information needed, Employees employed longer than 5 years are considered useless. Upper management is unprofessional and not to be trusted. Impossible to get a promotion within.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward the employees for work well done. Nikon takes too much away from the "little people" and gives to the upper management.
