Amazing engineering team, amazing sales and support staff, mediocre management and product direction.

I worked at Ning Inc full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The best group of engineers I've ever had the opportunity to work with; everyone cared about their respective tasks and contributions to the overall product, often working as hard as necessary to get things done regardless of how unreasonable the deadlines were.

    Cons

Long hours, grueling redundant work that feels largely unnecessary, impartial to career growth opportunities internally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Delegate more to tenured employees, especially the ones that have shown dedication and area expertise, be more conscious of overworking, and provide constant feedback on career paths at the company.

Great experience, pre acquisition by Glam. Post acquisition, a steady downward progression.

I worked at Ning Inc full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Super smart, super nice technical people at Ning, most of whom have now left. Senior management could never find a business strategy that really worked. Perhaps the third version of Ning, Ning3, will do the trick, but that is far from certain.

    Cons

Glam Media, the acquirer, did a lousy job of trying to merge Ning's technical culture with Glam's sales culture. Ning was filled with great mid-level managers, mostly transparent decision making, and superb technical talent. Glam is the opposite, well, except for the few remaining Ning software developers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replace the recruiting video on Ning's website. Although the website has been updated recently, the video is over 2 years old, was filmed months before the acquisition, and most of the people interviewed have left. Though I guess it's a perfect example of Glam's sales oriented culture.

    I worked at Ning Inc

    Pros

Perks typical of any well-funded startup - catered lunches, massage, etc
Some of the most innovative, driven, creative, and kindest people I've worked with

    Cons

Burned through investment dollars with no clear direction and without gaining traction with the product. Employees were never successfully integrated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior leadership needs to participate in forming a cohesive business direction that isn't chaotic, confusing, random, and unprofitable. The amount of time and effort employees had to spend "managing upwards" at this company was astounding.

I worked at Ning Inc full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great young community of employees; Some good perks including free breakfast 3 days a week, snacks, drinks, etc.

    Cons

Managers who do not have management experience; Very little clarification on actual job positions; Little to no positive feedback from management; Professional development opportunities not available nor do they seem to be encouraged.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide managers with opportunities for management growth and learning; many are still young and do not have the experience to hold this position. More training is needed!

I have been working at Ning Inc

    Pros

Small company, but not too small - great people - Everyone is approachable and the customers are very cool. Good optimistic feeling about where the company is going - and everyone seems to have a chance to share their ideas.

    Cons

Commute from the city - but caltrain pass helps. Still some hangover from the past org before the switchover but things seem to be looking up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less meetings ;) also bring in more customers to talk to us - or the president. need to hire more engineers.
