Pros
Great work life balance, wonderful people to work with
Cons
zero room for advancement unless you are Finnish. Micromanagement, useless tasks deemed very important
Pros
Work life balance
Coworkers are great
Global perspective
Finally looks like there is a strategy to get behind
Lots of time PTO
Cons
Confused strategy
Reorg after reorg
Finnish management culture
Siloed culture can make it difficult to get things done
There is a lot of bureaucracy
Advice to Senior Management
Get out of Finland and focus on the things that will really make a difference, totally the wrong direction in withdrawing back to Finland.
Pros
Benefits and Flexible schedule to work
Cons
Not invented here mentality of Finish centric.
Myopic and stubborn old school management
Advice to Senior Management
New non Finnish blood needed. Move away from Finland
Pros
Nokia is a Good place to work. It is surrounded by Good community where you can easily find a place to live in. If you find an apartment nearby, Life is peaceful. Also the kind of challenges you face in Nokia are interesting ones. By nature Nokia workmates turn out to be very Supportive.
Overall its a very wonderful experience.
Cons
Sometimes Weather gets too hot.
If you are have a crappy manger, your life can easily become hell. Either you end up working late and missing on our life or you will be screwed.
Pros
The benefits from Nokia are very good compared to most companies. Nokia picks up the majority of the basic costs for healthcare and matches 401k up to 6% total. Due to distance from Finland, when you start work very early local time, you get flexi-time later in the day to take care of personal business.
Cons
Nokia as a whole is contracting back to Finland. All roles and functions outside of Finland are reduced and even inside Finland there have been reductions. If the company is not successful with the new Windows Phones in the US Market during 2012, then expect further reductions in 2013.
Advice to Senior Management
You would have been far better served by having your lower level management use this year of reductions to handpick the people to leave. Instead, you cut wide numbers of people with skills & knowledge that are not easily recreated. 2012 will be a very confusing and very hard year.
Pros
Work life balance is great. Flexibility to manage personal life is great.
Cons
Lousy company to work for in the US if you are in one of the corporate functions
Advice to Senior Management
You must deliver to ATT and Verizon.
Pros
Great work/life balance, great management and team, team building is very strong, benefits are excellent, compensation is ok. Innovation and social responsibility are promoted.
Cons
Constant change and reorganization, compensation could be better
Advice to Senior Management
Retain talent
Pros
Nokia has a great work/life balance. Also, they are open to hear from people regardless of position.
Cons
Senior management was very slow to act on the iPhone challenge. Also, working in satellite office meant that we had little input to our direction, at least in the case of my project.
Advice to Senior Management
Work like crazy to come up with a competitive smartphone, market it in the US, then push to innovate so that they have something unique (vs iPhone and Android).
Pros
Good benefits and work/life balance.
Cons
Very limited career enhancement opportunities.
Pros
Global opportunities and now really starting over so chance to grow.
Cons
Limited Vision and lack of customer focus
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to the customer, as we've struggled to meet their needs and so many key relationships are not built on trust. We have repution of arrogance and not able to communicate our position clearly.
