Pros
Very, very good vacation package. Solid benefits including 401K contributions.
Cons
Management in US is not great, hope for better times with the new CEO. Good luck!
Advice to Senior Management
Advice for the new CEO - change the heads of your divisions - no imagination, all are stagnating! No Nokia presence in US!!! Why?
Pros
Great corporate culture caring for employees. Took care of employees but it was disconnected all over the organization. Very frustrating at times.
Cons
A rudderless ship and no backbone in middle management. Weak generic players all over the place. Very clubby, especially if you were outside the club. No downside for failing.
Advice to Senior Management
Nokia is finally changing its direction in the face of certain death. Nokians who felt this way before were accused of not getting it.
Pros
lot of competent smart people, unfortunately too geographically scattered to work closely with on a day to day basis. market leader, innovative products.
Cons
company as a whole is like a chicken with its head cut off... losing market share steadily and not knowing what to do. there is a culture of 'save-my-job' at the company, lots of fragmented groups vying to be relevant within the corporate echelons.
Advice to Senior Management
the company needs to set clear goal and direction, lose a LOT of the fat, and set dedicated tiger teams to achieve them.
Pros
Great work life balance. Flexible telecommute options. Cutting Edge technologies
Cons
Slow to change according to the market
Advice to Senior Management
Rethink the North America Marketing plan for SmartDevices and come up with a better UI on the devices.. Just have a look at all the great RFEs in the TRUE system.
Pros
Good place to work with. Leader in high tech
Cons
priorities change frequently resulting in roadmap changes
Advice to Senior Management
none
Pros
Benefits are very good. Multi-national company with strong presence across the globe. Not a good presence here in the US.
Cons
Decision-making is pretty much through Finland. If you work in the US its tough to get things done.
Advice to Senior Management
Become more adaptive to the differences in various markets. Don't try to invent everything and focus more on leveraging other technologies - ie Android platform for mobile devices.
Pros
Great benefits, good people, free soda
Cons
Lack of clear direction as a company
Advice to Senior Management
Pick a direction/technology/market and stick to it
Pros
Benefits!
Vacation: A new hire immediately gets a vacation bank of 80 hours Vacation, 40 Hours of Floating and 80 Hours of Family Health (sick, bereavement etc) without needed to accrue. Every year of service gets you more Vacation days. With 5 years I have 200+ hours of vacation.
401K match: Nokia matches $for$ upto 8% of total cash compensation. Vesting period is 4 years
Phone: Employees get free phones (latest devices) with Voice & Data plans
Home Office: DSL/Cable Internet subsidized.
Off-site Fitness Reimbursement upto 250$ per year
Flexible work schedules: I have worked remote (vpn, mobile vpn) out of the town.
Good Health Benefits:
Cons
Base Salary is typically less and yearly increase percentages dismal in the US.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't kill the goose that lays the golden egg.
Take a closer ook at middle management inefficiencies .
Pros
This Business Unit offers great opportunities to grow and advance within the organization. They do recognize a work/life balance and encourage employees to shut down from work and enjoy your life. Management encouraged eduction in both professional areas and in personal interest. Once you were in a career path, you weren't forced to stay there. Anyone could decide to expand themselves thru a career change.
Senior Management had an open door policy. This wasn't lip service, you really could just drop by and speak with the General Manager of the Unit. How often can you say that about a place you worked?
Cons
When people hear the name Nokia, they first think of cell phones or mobility. Few know that Nokia has the most secure Firewall and provide other products such as Intrusion Prevention Systems. Name branding was strong on mobility and very weak on Network Security.
Everything had to be decussed to death. The Finnish model of Management enforced the practice of agreement. Sometimes, it is very hard to obtain and even harder when personalities or egos get in the way. On occassion, it would have been good to take action and then work thru the committee.
These are the only two things I can think of as negatives.
Advice to Senior Management
None, It is a very good place to work. It was an AMAZING place to work.
Pros
Great company with real potential for individual success. Constant renewal.
Cons
Very large, to really grow it appears relocation is necessary. Sometimes change for change sake can be too much.
Advice to Senior Management
Excellent vision and strategy but don't hesitate. Don't let the gian tthat Nokia has become suppress it's ability to be a leader.
