    Former Employee - Principal Engineer

I worked at Nokia Networks as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

The positives included a talented work force, sense of project ownership, interesting work, and current technologies. The employer was also competitive in terms of compensation.

    Cons

Lack of product strategy across multiple sites resulted in competing product development. This created a brain-drain of talent, overall waste of resources, and eventual demise of the site.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Assign tactical and strategic direction per cost center.

I have been working at Nokia Networks full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

After a tough few years, the results of the transition back to Nokia are starting to take effect in a positive way.

    Cons

Due to the various mergers with other companies and change in personnel, there is currently no culture. It will take time to get the Nokia culture defined.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure company values are well-defined & understood by all, and work on retaining key talent.

I worked at Nokia Networks full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Co-workers were great -- some of the smartest folks I've known. In my environment, at least, the schedules were flexible, telecommuting was allowed, and the benefits were pretty good.

    Cons

The pay was okay, but raises corporate-wide were small and scarce. Communication from upper-management was, as I saw it, a one-way street, and only the "good stuff" was communicated. If there was something less than stellar, I typically didn't hear about it until I read about it on some third-party web site. Everything seemed to be a secret.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open up. Be up front with employees about what's going on. Secrets breed fear, and fearful people sometimes don't do things in the best interests of the company.

I have been working at Nokia Networks full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Nokia Networks is making a play at several markets so I am hopeful of better projects coming down the pipeline. Nokia enjoys a good reputation and working here for a few years will add a nice highlight to your resume.

    Cons

Nokia North America does not invest in its employees (in house training is very obsolete or so specific that it pigeon-holes you).
Opportunities for promotion and growth are non-existent on the US side, but we see frequent updates on the European side.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We understand you bought us for the US customers but you have an awesome engineering core in the US that is rusting away right now.

    Pros

nice people to work with. Many projects

    Cons

Many mid-level managers with not much to do. Too many redundant processes

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep streamlining

    Recommends
