    SW Engineer in Nokia

    Software Engineer (Current Employee)
    Athens (Greece)

ProsProcesses for keeping quality at high level.
Job change is possible, due to the large range of products and positions.

ConsFlexibility is not always the case, due to bureaucracy.
Due to the magnitude of the Company, people often don't see the big picture, regarding what should be done to get the company higher, despite the top-down frequent communication. In order not to feel small, people sometimes try to magnify their work, and this sometimes leads to misunderstandings.

Advice to Senior ManagementEnhance internal communication from engineers towards management.
    Give more perks.

How culture can sometimes affect company performance

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat people, international environment, smart devices managed to change its portfolio of products.

ConsSome other parts like HERE have sold a dream for long and overall many committees, lack of decision and outside of some parts which re-organised themselves effectively, too much politics

    I don't regret any day

    Senior Software Developer (Former Employee)
    Ulm, Baden-Wurttemberg (Germany)

Prosprofessional and at the same time casual environment with an everything can be done attitude that is not too shy to invest in itself

ConsHiring a CEO from a competitor with a clear anti-Nokia product strategy caused the mobile business to go downhill.

Fragmented, with the Bay area trying to call the shots for the San Diego office

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Rancho Bernardo, CA

ProsThe department managers are true professionals and committed to their goals and team members.

ConsThe HR function has a bizzare approach and non-professional manner in handling decisions.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind a way to have cohesive and unified approach at all US locations, a method to ensure all of Nokia US is structured to have the SAME goals and paths to get there; using an in-synch methodology.

    New Nokia

    Senior Manager (Current Employee)
    Berlin (Germany)

ProsSome very capable hands-on managers and engineers who are very good at what they do. Company has good values and ethics i.e.. no corruption.

ConsExpect a reorg twice a year. Strategic decisions look max 12-18 months out. Planning by crisis. HR is woeful.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook 5-10 years ahead and build towards it. Have confidence that enough markets will absorb our products going forward. Ditch "agile" from the company vocab and replace it with words like "effective" and "evolved". Ditch the "revolution" concept as it's the same wheel spinning!

ProsNice place to build up your professional capabilities: leadership, business acumen, dealing with ambiguity.

ConsA place hard to get promotion. Too big to change it to accommodate the business dynamic.

    Great place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat atmosphere. Friendly coworkers. Good salaries. Good in-house cafeteria. Happy smart coworkers. Innovation was valued and encouraged. Was very happy to be part of the company.

ConsDue to changing competitive environment, lay offs were always a topic. As such, there was an definite sense of uncertainty about the future. Not knowing if your job was safe became a serious damper on the otherwise great atmosphere.
