ProsGreat people to work with locally. Excellent work and personal life balance. Offices are always inviting and IKEA-like. Local employees are top notch.

ConsUnless you are upper management, you will be flying coach for business. Software coming from the home office lacks urgency and can generally be counted on to be late.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake some chances with products. Don't use current technology for future products. We'll never catch up with the competition unless this changes.

ProsNokia is great. Great Work Life Balance. Managers really care about you. International travel. Laid back atmosphere. Good products

ConsTop performers get laid off because of constant reorganizations. Not marketing to the US market the way they should be.

Advice to Senior ManagementFire the North America Marketing Group & start over. Advertise in the US. Who cares about the Nokia theater or product placement in movies or videos. Advertise in magazines & commercials. Put up billboards in LA, & NYC. Create some buzz. You have great products, but in the US, you have to have them shoved in your face to sell. Especially against the Iphone. Also, get a little more innovative.

ProsThe company values are in the right place. There is a huge effort to be fair and open. The biggest issue is with the global company.

ConsThey have lost the direction and keep restructuring to try and get it back. Restructuring will never give a company direction.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a stand. Any stand and stick to it...

ProsCan't beat the benefits and the opportunity to try different positions. Good, smart people work there and the lower-level managers can be quite excellent.

ConsSenior management struggles with how to compete in the North American markets. Somehow North America does not get the support it really needs to be competitive. Need to be able to turn around software much quicker.

Advice to Senior ManagementNorth America really needs to be the focus.

ProsWorking globally. Learning new cultures. The people that work at Nokia are amazing people. Friendly, and many have experience that can help a person grow and expand their knowledge in the telecommunications industry.

ConsConstant downsizing and restructuring of organizations. Too many layoffs, creating over-worked employees. Nokia is slow to market with their products. They wait for the competition to launch a product, then copy that technology. Nokia is focused on the Finnish way of doing business. They seem uninterested in North America and the US based customers. They are more focused on European, Latin America and India. Where they make the most money on cheap phones.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't always delegate. Learn what your employees are doing to better Nokia. Think outside the box! Management needs to take more chances and launch more products that the customers want and ask for. Management should also remember, it is not always a good business decision to launch a product with known quality or software issues and wait for the customer to complain before fixing them.
More money should be focused on understanding the latest technology, rather than on marketing in random movies or buildings.

Prosgood benefits, interesting technology
If you like working long hours, Nokia is the place for you. The people are great, the environment and culture is good. The company has a long history of surviving and reinventing itself over the past 140 years. Has a European feel and has much divertisty. Management never tires of changing things every 6 months. Good use and embracing technology

Consemployees are expected to interact globally, no travel permitted, so you have conference calls around the clock 3am, midnight, 6pm etc
Management never tires of changing things every 6 months. Company has a strong global brand but has failed with the US market, conserviative approach to business.

Advice to Senior Managementlisten to your front line workers, they are closest to the work

ProsNokia has a great work-life balance; Nokia's employees are diverse, friendly and always willing to help; Nokia provides fair compensation and excellent benefits; The location and weather in San Diego is hard to beat; It is assuring to know you are working for the top cell phone maker in the world.

ConsThe main issue seems to be that our product always seems to be a step behind the competition. For example, we are only now putting out flip, slide and full qwerty phones, while everyone else has moved on to touch screen technology. By the time our touch screen product is out, the competition will have moved on to the next bigger and better thing.

Advice to Senior ManagementWe must do what we can to be leaders with our product instead of followers.
