I worked at Nokia full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good company to work for. While Nokia’s rally has been eye-popping, it’s not without substance. The company is a realistic third option for the major carriers.

    Cons

It is getting smaller. Nokia is yet another classic case of how a tech company can easily lose out thanks to leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It takes time to get an organization into shape.

I worked at Nokia full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Fair local management, worked with a great number of talented people. Loads of opportunity to learn concepts of mobile phone theory. Most coworkers pleasant to work with. HR process was good at screening people who wouldn't have fit in. Some crunch time, but work life balance was fine.

    Cons

Upper management had little vision. Some coworkers could get pigeon-holed. Review process could be tedious.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Local management was fine. Company management lost focus, causing great downfall and subsequent sale to MS.

I worked at Nokia full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very professional, trusting, easy to get along with management. High priority on work-life balance; flexible hours. Importance of results stressed, not individuals' way of working. No micromanaging; it was assumed that each person would contribute to the company's success in his or her own way.

    Cons

Some people don't contribute to the best of their ability- this sometimes seemed to be overlooked by management. Some important areas were not keeping up with the capabilities and needs of the market, and caused slow response to consumers' demands for up to date products.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some marketing people who actually understand the consumers. Learn how to manage software design and maintenance.

I worked at Nokia full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Titles don't mean a thing. You are free to challenge management. Very little company politics, at least from middle management on down. Excellent work/life balance and company values.

    Cons

Difficult to move up the ladder unless you are willing to move to Finland. Many midnight phone calls.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior mgmt. was clueless under Elop, so hopefully without him (now with MSFT) Nokia will once again regain their 'Sisu' under Suri.
