Treats its employees extremely well, at some cost

    Director (Former Employee)
    White Plains, NY

Pros- Great salary / benefits esp holiday/vacation
    - "Very Human" company, really cares about employees, particularly those in RIF situations
    - Employees empowered / autonomous in their respective areas

Cons- Too lenient and at times ambivalent toward poor performance at all levels
    - Employee programs almost too generous, particularly in tough times
    - Classic hubris among management / employees in 2007+ timeframe as the previous market leader, until too late

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep tightening in all areas, stay the course with current "least bad" smartphone strategy. More top-down execution / prioritization directives.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Big ideas, but an uncertain future

    Communications Manager (Former Employee)
    White Plains, NY

ProsGreat people who are passionate about their jobs and the work that they do. You will meet bright, hard-working people who understand the very best of today's mobile technologies. And, they make some of the best phones you will ever use.

ConsI loved my time at Nokia - about 4 years. But today, the future of the company - especially in N. America - is very uncertain. If they start to get optimal carrier support for their new Windows-based smartphones, then maybe they can turn things around - but there are a lot of risks.

Advice to Senior ManagementEnsure that all efforts are placed in making the N. American marketplace a real success again - get in with the carriers, and advertise like mad. Please.

Used to be a great company to work for, now some units are still great and some not so much.

    Senior Manager (Current Employee)
    White Plains, NY

ProsGreat benefits, good pay, good opportunities for international assignments, fast paced environment. Mostly small teams and organizations.

ConsNo work/life balance, a lot of conference calls that are in the middle of the night. decisions take forever, mgmt not held accountable for their decisions, intense pressure to deliver with very little time and resources. Good ideas can be dismissed if they don't fit current "emergency". Your job security is not based on how good you are but what you happen to be doing or the team you happen to be in. Top performers get laid off regularly, while lower performing people get to keep their jobs just because they were in a "safe" unit. Everybody wants to have a say on everything but no one wants to have the responsibility / accountability for the decisions.

Advice to Senior Managementcredibility and trust are an issue when strategic directions changes all the time

Once great place to work is now somewhat of a sinking ship.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    White Plains, NY

ProsWhen Nokia was truly a Finnish company the transparency, innovation and fun was high. Very little hierarchy and people could be assured that their ideas mattered.

ConsParanoia, self-delusion, and desperation…that is the current mood. Though there are still some very good people in the company but many have left. Senior management is often Microsoft castoffs.

Nokia, not what it once was

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    White Plains, NY

ProsGlobal reach, large still somewhat positive brand recognition OUTSIDE of the US.

ConsPrior to the current CEO, the modus operandi was, "when in doubt, reorganize". There were 6 or 7 major reorganizations within the 5 years I've been at Nokia. Now, they're brining in outside talent who, despite the company laying off literally thousands worldwide, are hiring from outside for jobs that could have been easily handled by internal employees. They are admittedly extremely generous in the current round of layoff packages, but the new leadership team are spotty in terms of expertise relevant to their current executive roles. And they have a global company transfer policy of moving just your stuff with no regard to cost of living increases, return policies, housing and child education support...just moving you and your stuff like a pawn on a chessboard. Great, talented staffers are at times refusing to move for the company these days given the constant (and I mean at least over the last two years and continuing) turmoil and bad company financial results. Morale low too. Think twice about joining, and if there, refurbish your LinkedIn and CV materials and start networking broadly outside.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire execs with prior experience in the role they are slotted into. Keep top talent, not favorites.

Nokia, a great place - see you again in five years...!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    White Plains, NY

ProsGood work-life balance (depending on the team and position) and relatively decent pay, flexible work hour, promotion of individual leadership, opportunity to move within the organization, free speech with people in any level

ConsUneven quality of work among employees, too much promotion of individual leadership without clear and aligned goal setting (leading to wasted effort), random and seemingly unfair promotion of the people who are putting great effort in networking instead of working

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease maintain Nokia's great culture. transparent communication. Promote Finnish work ethic across the globe. Leadership of people in every level is important but let them know clearly what contribution they have to make - otherwise people will waste their effort (as they have been). Finally, pls do do not screw up. I still have Nokia stocks. All the best!

A great company but due to poor management and lack of vision, constantly deteriorating.

    Development Manager (Current Employee)
    White Plains, NY

ProsStill enjoys a huge mind and market share, and therefore opportunities ahead provided the management shows superior vision and execution strength.

ConsHighly bureaucratic, risk averse, and lack of accountability culture in an industry which is highly organized, constantly innovating and trying new things.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange doesn't mean taking a 180 degree turn but to recognize previous strength areas and preserve and nourish those, while changing towards agile model

much much better than any US employer i've worked for

    Senior Manager (Current Employee)
    White Plains, NY

Prosfairness to employees, benefits, quality employees, cross-training across functions (employees aren't professionally siloed into a particular career)

Constoo big and matrixed organizationally, managemetn is disconnected from the consumer and the actual tasks employees are doing. no focus on retention and measuring retention, management is prone to letting employees figure out how to fix problems even though the problem is systemic (i.e. management is disconnected from the consumer).

Advice to Senior Managementstay focused on what really matters and stop reorging the company when you don't know what else to do

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
